The Health Benefits Of Watermelon

One of our most pleasant memories of summer is a juicy watermelon on a hot day. Growing your own is very enjoyable and there are several varieties to choose from.

Living Water

Watermelons are also very healthy, especially for the kidneys. This is because of the water in the watermelon. It is not just water. It is biological water, referred to as “living water.” The living water in melons (including cantaloupes) has went through thousands, or possibly millions, of chemical reactions that occur in the cells of the living plants.

The water in melons is actually “plant serum.” This plant serum water is good for such ailments as arthritis and gout, but it is particularly healthy for urinary infections and kidney stones.

How to Plant

Watermelons come in different sizes, shapes and colors. They run from very small to extremely huge. They can be round or oblong in size. The color of the watermelon flesh can range from red to yellow.

With just a little planning it’s pretty easy to grow watermelons. They can even be grown in containers. A lot of space is needed for the huge varieties such as the “Jubilee,” or the “Charleston.” These melons can get up to 70 pounds and require a garden plot of 6 feet by 4 feet for each plant.

The “icebox” varieties are smaller, and, as the name suggests, can fit into a refrigerator. The “Sugar Baby” is round in shape and weighs anywhere from 5 to 18 pounds. These can be planted in 2 feet by 4 feet spaces per plant.

Watermelons need to be planted in sandy loam soil in little mounds called “hills,” about 3 inches high and 12 to 18 inches wide. (The soil pH should be 6.0 to 6.8.) Space the rows anywhere from 2 feet to 6 feet apart, depending on the available space and type of melon.

The “Garden Baby” is a type of bush watermelon and can be planted in an area of 2 feet by 2 feet. This particular variety can also be planted in a container. Try planting one on your patio in a large container.

Health Benefits of Watermelons

Watermelons have an abundant supply of vitamins and minerals. The “living water” in them helps kidneys to remove toxins. The alkalizing properties in melons fights urinary infections.

It is better to eat watermelon before a meal. Eating it after a meal can cause indigestion. This is because it dilutes your gastric juices and puddles in the stomach.

Have fun this summer by growing your own watermelons or get them from a stand on the side of the road. Either way, they are delicious and filled with “living water.”

I hadn't thought about that before, but it makes sense that many seeds are dormant till it gets warm enough. Glad to be following you, too, Rob! You are a great writer.

Thanks Georgia, the adage "you are never to old to learn" as well as "you have to be educated enough to know what you don't know" makes discussions like these fruitful for all. I am the first to admit I don't know everything and find it wonderful to learn a new lesson from someone everyday. Keep up the good work.

Great article, water melons grow almost wild in our country from people discarding seed when eating the fruit. What I found when on my farm I planted the seed early and found the plant only germinated when ground temperatures reached the optimum. This is a case with many of these type seeds, pumpkin, squash can't think of any more at this moment. But many a seed will lie dormant until optimum conditions are reached. I never transplanted any of the bigger flat seeded plants merely stuck them in the ground and left them to do there own thing. I naturally cannot talk for your side of the world not knowing all the conditions, but most hard flat seed will not rot in the ground, but await the right temperatures. Glad to be following you and to have you follow me. I do ramble a lot.

Very interesting. So, it really doesn't matter if I plant my seeds too early outside as it won't damage them and they will start when the conditions are ready. How smart are these seeds? This information will also save me from worrying "why haven't they started growing yet", since I now know the answer. Thanks, Rob!

AJ a trick I have often used is to falsely fool the seed into thinking it is time to grow, but placing them in the fridge for a day or two and then into the ground. The warmer ground temperature gets them going quicker. But remember if a cold snap comes in late this can cause complications. This is an old trick when planting winter bulbs.

Great article, Georgia, I learned a lot! We bought sugar baby watermelon seeds to plant this year, so I appreciate the tips on growing them. One question on that - should I start the seed indoors or start them directly in the ground? I also learned that the reason watermelon never agrees with me is that I eat it as a dessert! I'll have to try it on it's own and see if I still have issues. Thanks for the tips!

Thanks, AJ. It depends on what part of the country you live in as to whether you should start them indoors. If it's still too cool to plant outside, go ahead and start them inside. Don't let them grow any bigger than they have to while indoors. They say a big watermelon plant doesn't transplant that well. I know what you mean about eating watermelon as dessert! I did it for years and got indigestion. I know better now!

Just thinking of the heart of the watermelon makes my mouth water! My mother always refers to the heart when she's eating one. Planting those sugar babies is a good idea! Thanks, Kevin.
