I have had the honor of being blessed a grandmother twice in the last 4 years. I have a 4 year old granddaughter and a 6 month old grandson. And, boy do I do things differently with them then I did my own children when they were tots. Or do I?....I guess I need to think about that for a long minute.

Let me s e e....I worked full time for 44 years as a nurse. My husband was also employed full time. We are both newly retired. During our younger years it was important for me to keep some of the traditions that my mother held close while I was growing up. One of the most important traditions was to have dinner on the table every night for my dad and I. I was taught that I could not eat anywhere except at the table, with the TV off. (can you guess where this is going)? My mother had a passon to fix something from all the basic food groups at each meal. She would have a meat or meat casserole, a vegetable, a fruit, a bread, and a desert. Oh yes and milk for me, always, white not chocolate. Once a month she would set the table with the china and crystal and I learned more table manners.

In nursing, and only a nurse would fully understand that quite frequently your 8 hour shift may instantly turn into 10,12, sometimes 16 hours before we were given the ok to leave. And, sometimes I would not make it home at all. I think that I tried to have a good meal made for my husband and kids before I left for work, sometimes I left the responsibility up to my husband. My husband is so good in most areas around the house, however, cooking is no where near his expertise. He told me that he has opened his share of Spagetti O's, with popcicles for desert. After a mom and dad have worked all day and they finally get home there is homework, laundry, cleaning, baths and etcl. All of you parents out there know what I am saying. This is where fast food really does come in handy. Lets not forget pizza deliveries. How cool is that, and an answer to our dreams after a very busy day. When we order fast food or pizza, guess what? No one really eats at the table anymore. The proper place is in front of the TV.

We ourselves do our share of fast food service. It is so convinent. Fast food establishments are getting better I believe with their efforts to serve more salads, offer of fruits, and juices, by being more aware of caloric content by listing ingredients and calories on menus. In all their efforts to make things better it still does not replace mom's traditional dinner. I hear what you are saying...".But, there just is no time to go to all that trouble, and I am TIRED after I get home." I believe that we can accomplish the old time tradition by putting forth more of an effort and organzing our time a little better. We all have 24 hours in a day. It is what we do with that 24 hours that matter the most.

Once in a while fast food is ok and fun to do, however, I have also seen what a steady diet of fast food does to our children and us as parents, such as: decrease in communication at the dinner table and a lack of teaching. One does not dare speak in front of the TV. My granddaughter gets so focused on the TV that she will not hear if I am speaking to her or not. What about the teaching of social manners? And then there is so many health issues associated with a steady diet of fast food that I cannot begin to list all of them. Child and Adult obesity I feel is the biggie, with some of the rest such as high blood pressure, allergies, headaches, heart problems, acid reflux, skin problems, fatigue, lack of adequate vitamin and mineral intake and the list can grow. Our kids are suffering and will contiune to do so into adulthood if we do not recognize what we as parents have done and continue to do. We need to change our way of thinking and of doing things for the sake of our children and ourselves.

Eating together with your family is very important. When I was in school I always had my luch with my sister and on Saturdays and Sundays the whole family gathered for lunch, great-grandmother included.

Very good point Carolann, it is more what we do with the time than whether we have it. I believe children are suffering because parents do not set aside sufficient for them in ways you have mentioned.
