Veganism And Smalll Children: Is it Healthy Or Appropriate for Young Children to Go Animal Free?

A new picture book is inspiring both discussion and criticism about children's health and nutrition. That book, "Vegan is Love: Having a Heart and Taking Action" details the meat industry in vivid detail. While it was meant to start discussion and questions about where food comes from, some critics are saying that the images are too grotesque and brutal to be beneficial to young children. In addition, health experts are questioning whether a vegan diet is appropriate to young children at all.

Advocates of the vegan diet say that it gives them a lower risk of disease, especially heart disease and others that are typically related to an animal based diet. But, children are at a stage of rapid development and growth and need many of the nutrients that they might be lacking from a vegan diet. While there are plant based sources for many of those nutritional building blocks, some must be supplemented with pills and other methods.

Children especially need calcium and protein, usually received from animal products, including milk and various meat sources. But, calcium can be obtained from a number of other sources including fresh carrot juice, tofu and kale. Protein, typically from meat can be obtained from tofu, beans and nuts as well as grains and some vegetables. Non-meat protein sources are typically incomplete meaning that they are missing one or more amino acid- combining sources can make up for the missing amino acid.

Another problem that concerns pediatric nutritionists is the potential deficiency in iron in the vegan diet. Children who are not getting iron from meat sources should be consuming plenty of dark, leafy greens. Vitamin B12 can be supplemented with vitamins.

Children who follow a vegan diet usually do well, especially if they are able to get outside for at least a half hour each day, getting natural Vitamin D from the sunshine. But, eating this way does something else as well, according to advocates. The youngest vegans are prone to following a healthy diet for the rest of their life, avoiding the dangers of the calorie dense, nutritional void diet of their peers as well as the numerous conditions that can typically follow such as obesity, heart disease and diabetes.

Despite the health claims, some critics are calling the book and the underlying message another attempt by the "liberal, socialists" who want to control every aspect of life including what parents feed their children. There is no estimate of how many children are fed a vegan diet, worldwide, however, many vegans point out that meat is not typically eaten daily in many nations.

Great article. As a doctor with post-doctorate certification in clinical nutrition, I can tell you that parents who are nutritionally saavy can provide their children with all the foundational building blocks with a vegan diet. And, most people are now aware that it is a complete myth that cows milk is a good source of calcium and/or protein. It surely is not. In the nations with the hightest consumption of cows milk, the rates of osteoporosis and cavities are the highest, too. If cows milk grew strong teeth and bones, the nations with the highest consumption should have the lowest rates of cavities and osteoporosis, not the highest. Thanks for the great article.
