This article explains a little about Vitamin Supplements and how we get them. They can be added to the diet in Natural source or be added artifically in order to fulfill nutritional needs and FDA guidelines. We already mentioned in one of our articles that too much of anything is not good. We should realize that the non-nutritional things we eat on a regular basis is not good for us, but also, if we eat too much of all the good things it may cause us some problems or side effects also.

One would not normally think that supplements and vitamins are not really medications but to be on the safe side we should consider them medications and exercise caution when taking them. Use common sense and follow our doctors advise. *According to Cornell, supplements should not be taken in doses greater then 100% of the recommended daily allowance.*

We have already talked about the fat-soluble Vitamins A, E, D and K. These vitamins are stored for month's in our body's liver. Vitamins A and D can easily cause toxicity and it is rare to have a deficiency in these fat soluble vitamins.

Water soluble vitamins are less apt to cause toxicity. As I mentioned prior the body will just excrete these vitamins that the it does not need. If you take too much of these you are just throwing money away.

A vitamin supplement may be needed in the following population groups: People with food allergies and are on a specific diet. Vegans on a strict vegaterian diets who do not eat animal products may need Vitamin B12, even if they are substituting soy in their diets, they may not be getting enough. People who consume excess amount of alcohol may benefit from supplements because alcohol impairs the body's ability to absorb and metabolize some vitamins and minerals. My husband adds, "alcoholics litterly strip their bodies of important nutrients".

Women in child bearing age may need Folic Acid, and this needs to be doctor directed because we don't really need a lot ot this vitamin. A little goes a long way.

Some people over the age of 65 may need Vitamin B6, B12, and D as their bodies are less able to metabolize these vitamins.

My husband would like to add that, " if someone is into weight lifting they should take a good multi-vitamin daily as directed, and this is sufficent. Body building has stages. In body builing cells are broken down. When this happens cells divide and muptiply and this is how a body builder get bigger. A person into weight lifting should take A good protein supplement or creatine or the newer more popular nitric oxide. Thise supplements are non additictive. If you take too much the body just gets rid of them." My husband will get into supplements in his weight lifting articles that he is currently working on.

Remember, treat vitamin, mineral and supplements as if they were medications. Take caution, get advice from your doctor and use common sense. Do not overdo a good thing.

Here's to your improved health and fitness
