What Is a Genetically Modified Food?

And I thought it's not nice to fool Mother Nature.

So what is a genetically modified food?

Genetically modified food (also known as GMO) is food that has been produced by genetically changing or modifying an organism.

The end result of this technology is the creation of plant and animal life that does not exist anywhere in nature.

GM foods are often referred to as "Frankenfood", a scary but descriptive concept that speaks for itself.

I call genetically modified food "freak food." It is not natural, and it has not been proven safe for human consumption. Yet, it has been foisted on us in the sneakiest fashion, and has infiltrated almost everything that we eat.

What ever happened to the confidence we used to have that our food could be trusted? Until recently, it never occurred to me to question the safety of foods being offered in grocery stores. If you bought a tomato at your local super market, you could be sure it was a real tomato. What changed?

Bio-technology is not new, however it is now suddenly an imposing presence in the food and agricultural industries.

Our food has been genetically engineered since the early to mid 1990's.

The purported purpose for modifying food is to make it cheaper and more nutritious.

Bio-engineers are splicing genes from totally dissimilar species, and thus interrupting their natural sequence. Potato genes are spliced with bacteria. Pigs are spliced with human growth genes. Fish are spliced with cattle genes. Tomatoes are spliced with fish genes. And it keeps going.

Does this sound uncomfortably like Atlantis to you?

This is not the same as cross-breeding. Cross-breeding takes place within the same or related species.

Biotechnology giant, Monsanto, is responsible for much of the genetic modification of our food supply.

Monsanto, along with other companies, is also a major supplier of pesticides, herbicides, fungicides and other chemicals. The primary companies in chemical research are: Bayer, Monsanto, DuPont, Syngenta, BASF, Dow Agro Sciences, Nufarm, Sumitomo, and Arysta Life Science.

When and how did genetically modified food come into being?

It all started with a Supreme Court ruling that allowed the patenting of life forms for commercial use.

The tomato was the first genetically modified food. "Flavr Savr" was developed by a company in California called Calgene. The technology was released and the tomatoes were introduced into the marketplace in 1994, with no labeling to inform consumers of its modification.

The technology quickly spread to Canada, the UK, Argentina, Brazil, China, and South Africa.

In Europe, it is mandatory that GMO is placed on the label, but GMO labeling has not been required in the US or Canada. GMO labeling is also demanded in the UK, Japan, Malaysia, Australia, and New Zealand.

Why has Monsanto invested $4.3 million in an effort to kill a bill in Congress that would require genetically modified foods to be properly labeled?

Because they know we won't buy that food.

Smart science or irresponsible science? It's controversial at best.

Our government claims that gene modification is safe. Many people believe there has been insufficient testing regarding safety.

We have no idea what the long range effects genetically modified food will have on our bodies, or how it will affect animals and our ecology. How is it affecting our health?

Let's take a look at the condition of our national health over the past decade.

There has never been so much obesity. Americans used to be quite slim as a group. What's changed? We are more toxic than ever. More and more people are suffering from food and environmental allergies. People have been suffering from compromised immune systems resulting in physical breakdown and disease, including cancer.

People are more sensitive to dairy than ever before. Gluten sensitivity is on the rise. The gluten content of wheat has quadrupled since the 1950's. There are more and more cases of Celiac Disease.

We are consuming more processed food than ever.

It is estimated that processed food is comprised of 70% GM ingredients.

Asking why manufacturers are doing this to our food is a moot point because it's obvious. Someone is making a lot of money by creating a tomato engineered to prevent rotting, an apple that doesn't turn brown, and corn that is engineered to be pesticide resistant. It's profitable.

So how do we protect ourselves? The best way is to avoid those GM foods.

Some of the most prevalent GM foods are: Canola oil, honey that comes from a place that is contaminated by GM plants, such as rapeseed (Canola), cotton seed oil, golden rice, soybeans, sugar cane, tomatoes (except for 100% organic), tobacco, meat that comes from animals that eat GM foods, vegetable oils (except for those that state "non-GMO" or "organic"), sugar beets, dairy products (except for organic), vitamins C, A, B2, B6, B12, D, and K that come from corn sources, corn, sweet corn, potatoes (except organic), papaya, farm raised salmon, artificial sweeteners such as aspartame.

Be vigilant of GM ingredients in processed foods. High fructose corn syrup is in everything. Buy food labeled "100% organic." Just plain "organic" does not guarantee there are no GM ingredients in the food.

Look at label numbers. If it is a 4-digit number, the food is traditionally produced. If it has a 5-digit number that begins with an 8, it is a GM product. GM foods are sometimes identified with "PLU", however, manufacturers are not required to use those letters. If the 5-digit number begins with 9, then it is organic.

Buy 100% grass fed beef. The meat industry is tricky. If you don't see 100% organic or 100% grass fed, then it's possible the cattle was fed GM corn or alfalfa during the last portion of their lives.

Buying from local farms is a safer way to go, although many of them are integrative. That means they use pesticides only when they have to. Still better than big industrial farms that always use pesticides. You can question your farmer about GM seeds.

Taking responsibility by taking matters into our own hands is imperative these days.

If we all take action, then maybe we will be able to trust our food again.

What is a genetically modified food? It's something I would prefer to have the choice not to eat.

Bon appetit!

Hi Kaite, What's the problem you're having? Sometimes they make you log in if you haven't been into Street Articles in a while. Is that the problem? My advice is go into chat and ask for some help. Kyle and Carson are in there often. At least, you'll get an immediate reply. They won't allow a link here so I can't give you Kyle's email address. I've been too busy to write. Really miss all of you. Hope you're well.

Thanks! Good article. I've been reading ingredients to avoid all corn and corn product since I was 13. My body rejects them as poisonous.

With modification, they really are poisonous. And some people are simply allergic to corn. I steer clear of it too. Stay well Cynthia.

this is an extremely serious hazard, more so because we don't really know what we are consuming... and if the GM foods are not labelled now, it'll cause tremendous amount of harm to our kids... thanks for this article... someone needed to bring this up...glad you did... :)

Glad you're glad. It's a crime that people have to be wary of the food they eat. Being alert to GM will save lives. Thank you for commenting.

This topic make my blood boil. Monsanto is a corporation which started as a chemical company producing Round Up Weed Killer. They have NO business being in the food industry yet are monopolizing it world wide. Monsanto torments, harasses and bullies farmers into use their GMO seeds. These GMO seeds are resistant to the pesticide sprays that accompany the sale. It is truly scary what a huge corporation can get away with if they have the money to sink into congress and any opposition. I could go on and on but I'll stop here and say thank-you Joan. Thank you for writing such an informative article which makes others aware of how important it is to support our organic farmers!

Absolutely Dee, they don't call them Monsatan for nothing. They have to be stopped. I'm for local farmers, especially organic farmers, and seasonal vegetables. If we patronize local farmers, the revenue will make it possible for them to grow. If there is a great demand for organic, then people will produce organic fruits and vegetables to fill the demand. Maybe the prices will come down. It starts with good soil. Thank you for adding your thoughts.

Joan, My two sons work at the same 'better foods' store. One son is a cook and my son a cashier. . The cook is in college taking courses in nutrition and has taken up the vegetarian way of eating over the past year. The cashier son has memorized most of the food codes. (There are no '8's where they work, only 9's and 4's) Since I don't shop where they work I take the cashier son shopping with me. On the very rare occasion of going out to dinner, I take my cook son with me to see if the food is of good quality and cooked properly. Together they make a 'dynamic duo.' Not everybody has the good fortune of having a leg up on the secrets of the food industry like I do. That's why I feel this very good and in-depth article you authored is of great importance.

Thanks William. Your two sons will keep you on the right path. Restaurants worry me because I don't know where they get their food and if they are taking any short cuts. Even the upscale restaurants can take short cuts. Also don't like nuking food, and I know they do that too. We don't even own a microwave oven. Take you so much for contributing to this article.

You put a link (the url from this article) into your article, and I'll edit this article to include a link to your GMO article. Just in case you don't know how to do it, you have to highlight a word or a 3 word phrase in the bottom third of your article, then copy this url and paste it into the wysiwig which is the blue globe on the top of the article on the edit page.

great article too...you know I read this and then forgot to post a comment....my bad.....so here I am ...and I know for a fact when I get a tomato that is not GMO cause it had taste...Did you know when they breed out the bitterness in lots of these foods so that people will like the more...they also breed out the salvestrol.....those bitter compounds have good stuff in them....I can remember every really good tomato I have eaten in the past 10 years......and where I ate them...;-)

Tomatoes don't have that high pitched taste lately. Maybe it's the tampering. Kaite, you might be interested in a website called Natural News. There's an excellent video on there from Jeffrey Smith about the dangers of GMOs. He wrote two books on the subject: Seeds of Deception and Genetic Roulette.

Monsanto is the worst of the bio-technology lot. They are often referred to as Monsatan. These greedy people are literally poisoning the planet. Even though this is not my niche, I feel it's critical that people know about GMO foods so that they can avoid them and also protest. Thanks for commenting.
