What You Sould Know About Honey

I've always loved honey. It was an important food item in my home as I grew up. But I was quite satisfied to know that it was a delicious natural food.

I recently came across a great source of information about honey, and it came from one of our own authors in Street Articles. The author is Balas Raluca, and she knows more about honey than anyone I've come across before.

So before going any further, I want to acknowledge that all the information about honey that I mention in this article comes from her blog, e honeybees.

What's so special about honey?

Beyond being a natural food, I learned that honey has amazing healing powers. I also learned that even though honey is a very sweet food, it does not have the same chemical composition as refined white sugar. Plain white sugar is an item to be avoided at all costs if you're trying to lose weight.

I mistakenly placed honey in the same category as refined sugar in terms of dieting foods to avoid. According to Balas Raluca, "research done up till now has proved that honey is not at all fattening." The reason is that since it is a natural product, not an altered refined product, it metabolizes much slower that refined white sugar.

This is great news so far as I am concerned, because since I have to watch my weight for medical reasons, it's great to find out that there is at least one naturally sweet product that I can incorporate into my eating plan.

Up till now, one of the deprivations of keeping my weight at the desired level has been having to do without refined white sugar in any form. Artificial, zero calories sweeteners are not desirable either. They were banned by the FDA for many years, and finally they were declared safe to use in your food.

Therefore, the prospect of using honey as a substitute for sugar is an exciting choice.

Although my interest in honey is as a natural food, Balas Raluca shows in her blog a number of natural remedy options offered by honey. As it turns out, honey has been a remedy for many ailments since ancient times. As such, it was a highly valuable item.

For me, honey will be a substitute for sugar and artificial sweeteners to be incorporated into my eating plan. If I also gain some important health benefits from consuming honey, that will just be a great bonus for eating this delicious food.

Honey is a common ingredient in Middle Eastern countries. One example is a Turkish pastry called "pastas," consisting in crushed nuts to make a pastry roll smothered in honey.

I am sure I will come across many dishes that rely on honey as a key ingredient.
