Omega -3 fish oils are promoted and advertised as being a important supplement, that you are advised to take. However there appears to be no clear medical research that support the claim that taking a daily fish oil supplement will be beneficial to your health.
Omega -3 fish oils are contained within the fatty flesh of cold water fish such a salmon and tuna and herring. The recommendations are that you should be eating oily fish 2-4 times a week as there are clear researched benefits gained from eating oily fish. These days people are choosing to eat a lot of processed and convenience foods and these foods contain very little Omega -3. The problem is that most people are not getting enough omega -3 in their diets as they are just not eating enough oily fish. In fact, it is stated that people are struggling to manage to eat just one portion of oily fish a week.
A major medical research study found that if you eat oily fish 2-4 times a week then this intake may reduce your risk of having a heart attack and a stroke. This research also said that if people took fish oil supplements then these, did not have the same effect and were found not to have any benefits at all. The research however, is unclear how eating oily fish may prevent strokes and heart attacks but it is thought the omega- 3’s in the fish oil, lower triglyceride fats and prevent the blood clotting. The triglyceride fats are the bad fats that are linked to evidence of clogging our arteries with fat deposits and causing heart attack and strokes to occur.
Other less robust research supports the use of taking Omega -3 fish oil supplements and says that they are beneficial.. As research continues to be done, it would appear that taking an Omega 3- fish oil supplement needs to come down to personal choice.
There is no shortage of people that will give you long lists of why you should be taking fish oils as a daily supplement. It is advertised as being safe to take, but there is some evidence that it should be taken cautiously and that taking large doses of Omega-3 can have some side effects such as experiencing nose bleeds.
Llike other supplements and vitamins and minerals that are available to buy, the advice would be, to find out as much information as you can about the product and then you will be more able to make an informed decision whether or not to buy Omega-3.
