Why A Vegetarian Diet Can Make You A Happy Person

Researchers have found that a fully or mostly vegetarian diet can both increase happiness and reduce stress. In a report that is being published in the Nutrition Journal, key nutrients in both meat based and vegetarian diets were compared for their influence on both the mood and stress level. During the study, researchers focused on many different components, but found that the balance of Omega 3 fatty acids and Omega 6 fatty acids was most likely to cause changes in the brain that led to mood disturbances.

Today's diets, especially high protein diets tend to over exaggerate the need for meat and fish which can lead to this imbalance. Diets high in animal flesh are also high in arachidonic acid, the animal source of Omega 6 fatty acids. In addition, unless the person is choosing grain fed meat over grass fed, the imbalance is even higher. In grass fed, Omega 6 fatty acid levels are five times higher than in grass fed. Grass fed tends to be slightly more expensive than grain, especially when referring to beef.

In the study, nearly forty confirmed meat eaters were assigned to follow one of three different diet plans. The control group were asked to eat meat, fish or poultry based meals every day. The second group was allowed to have fish but no other meat and were asked to have those fish meals between three and four times each week. In the third group unlimited vegetarian foods, including fresh fruits and vegetables were the only thing allowed with no meat or fish at all for the length of the study. After a two week period, all three groups were brought in and evaluated for their overall mood, their stress levels. Lab values were measured at that time as well. Researchers found that the happiness and general mood levels of the vegetarian only group were greatly improved, even that early into the process. In addition, that group had far better stress levels and improved lab scores, including blood pressure, cholesterol and blood sugar levels. Neither of the other two groups reported any type of change in mood, stress or overall health levels.

Adding more fruits and vegetables to the overall diet might give some of the same benefits, provided that some of the meat is decreased. Choosing leaner cuts of meat is also recommended for those that cannot or will not give up meat all together. Even staying meat free one or two times a week might be beneficial.

Amie, I lived on the road for 20 years. I weighed in at 225-230 lbs average then. The first six months off the road I dropped to 200 lbs. Thats been twelve years ago. My average weight now is 175-180 consistant. The change? Diet and activity. I'm not a vegan or a vegatarian. But, the majority of my diet includes nuts, fruits, whole grains and lots of veggies. Very small amounts of meat and poultry. The beef we do purchase is from a retired UDSA inspector who raises certified organic grass fed beef. That should tell you something about the beef industry. He says we don't ask enough questions about our food source. I often don't consume meat for a week or two. I do suggest to any one who is skeptical about what good nutrition is, or not, to watch FOOD Inc. for starters or SUPER SIZE ME. I like your article. look forward to reading more! Dave

That is great Dave, like you, I don't need to eat a "meat" with every meal to feel satisfied. It is not an essential and eating red meats too often is actually not that good for you. The fact of the matter is, the more vegetables that you eat, the fuller you are going to get and the less "lower quality" foods you are going to eat. People confuse fruits and vegetables. Fruits are very high in sugars (typically) and you are much better off eating vegetables. Fruits are still great for you, but they can make you gain weight if you eat them incorrectly. I have seen both of those movies, both are great!

I was a vegetarian for months and then found out that I am allergic to a lot of vegetables including some of my favorites. I do Meat free Monday and sometimes skip meat on other days as well, but with the type of time I spend working out I have to take great care that I am not missing out on my protein. I am happy on the days when I am meat free and I have noticed that I can go full on monster rage for nothing when I eat a lot of meat for the day.
