Why You Might Be When You Eat As Much As What You Eat

The old saying tells us that you are what you eat. According to a newly published study, when you eat may also play a role in how much you weigh as well as how easy or difficult it is to lose weight and the speed at which you do it. Most people are aware of some of the fitness "rules" about timing food, but this study might shed a little more light on why that timing is so important.

Among the most repeated fitness and nutrition rules: never skip breakfast, always try to stop eating after eight or nine pm, and never go more than a few hours without eating at all. A lesser repeated rule is to time protein for around an hour or so after an endurance or strength based workout. The study, based in Spain showed the importance of eating the bulk of the day's calories earlier in the day.

Researchers from Brigham and Women's Hospital, Tufts University and the University of Murcia looked at the timing of the meals for the day for two groups of overweight people. Participants were assigned to either eat their largest meal, which is typically lunch in Spain, either earlier or later than the average for the nation. For most people, lunch makes up between forty and fifty percent of the entire day's caloric intake and is usually eaten between noon and three pm. For the study, the group that was deemed "early" eaters were asked to have this meal before three. The second group, called the "late" eaters were asked to eat the same meal but after three pm.

The second group, the "late" eaters did lose some weight but not nearly as much as the other group did. In addition, the late eaters were found to be losing weight at a much slower rate than the early eating group. Researchers adjusted for several factors including types of meals and activity levels but still found the results were the same. However, the study did confirm that most of the late eaters were more likely to skip breakfast. Skipping breakfast has been established as key to slowing the rate of metabolism and may contribute to weight gain. The group that ate their largest meal earliest in the day not only lost weight faster but in larger amounts as well.

This study was published in the International Journal of Obesity and involved just over four hundred participants, both male and female.
