Am I A Food Addict? Signs And Symptoms

Am I a food addict? is a very important question to be asking yourself if you find that you answer YES to any of the following questions and/or scenarios...

But first, why is it important to know if you are a food addict? Well, fact is that those who are addicted to food are actually suffering from a form of substance abuse. It is similar, though not the exact same, as any other serious addiction. Why? Because food is being used and abused just as any drug or alcohol may be. The long-term effects of food addiction can cause extremely dangerous health risks and side-effects. These can lead to physical problems and diseases such as:

  • diabetes
  • sleep apnea
  • hypertension
  • cardiovascular disease
  • osteoporosis
  • high blood pressure
  • stress and anxiety

If you are wondering, am I a food addict, then it’s important that you are aware that these kinds of physical issues may already be, or may come to be a problem for you in the very near future if you do not seek help.

OK, so back to the questionnaire to help guide you in knowing if you may be addicted to food. Let’s take the following scenarios and if you find yourself saying YES then you may be a food addict and you need to seek the help and guidance of a professional:

  1. I can’t stop thinking about food and I eat when I am not hungry.
  2. I eat differently when I am alone as opposed to when I eat in front of others.
  3. I will drive as far as it takes to feed my cravings for certain food.
  4. I eat to escape feelings of stress, anxiety and nervousness.
  5. I admit that I have hidden food, stolen food, and eaten food that has expired its best before date.
  6. When I eat I eat everything I desire without thinking of the health consequences.
  7. When I eat I will eat until I feel sick, but still can’t stop.
  8. After I eat, I cry.
  9. After I eat I feel guilty, so I eat more to suppress the pain and shame.
  10. My doctor has told me I need to control my eating.
  11. My family and friends are very concerned about my weight gain.

If you have said yes or feel that these situations describe some or all of your eating habits then you need to know that you are NOT alone. You should know that just asking, am I a food addict?, is a step in the right direction. Many people who are food addicts will continue to ignore the signs and symptoms and until a real dangerous risk becomes apparent, they will continue to ignore the issue.

Millions of adults are food addicts. Millions of people do not seek the help, but if you are looking for support and help then asking am I a food addict will definitely jump-start your journey back to a healthy, happy and balanced life.
