Are Fat Acceptance Movements Dangerous to Their Members\' Health?

There are bigots and haters for every group in society and while some are very vocal, no matter who they might be offending, many are a little more circumspect, keeping their vileness as quiet as possible. But, there is one exception to that rule. Fat shaming, the bigoted and hateful treatment of people based purely on their size is one of the last bastions of negativity that is not only still out in the open but is largely accepted. But, there are plenty of people who want to change that, calling attention to the mistreatment of fat people everywhere.

Golda Poretsky, who has dubbed herself a health and wellness coach and fat activist is one of those people. After more than two decades of yo yo dieting without being able to maintain any of her success, she has opted to stop focusing on weight itself but rather, on the health aspects of her circular dieting and her body in general. Poretsky now focuses on maintaining her health and encouraging others to become more comfortable in their own skin.

But, critics are worried that Poretsky and others like her could possibly be damaging the health of others. Some fat acceptance societies are merely looking to gain respect for their members while others are trying to push the envelope a little more, even pushing for members to gain even more weight. Some of the most extreme of the movements are setting impossibly high minimum weights for membership. That, according to doctors and nutritionists is a health care nightmare just begging to happen and a red flag of epic proportions.

Most studies reveal that being overweight is dangerous from a health and wellness standpoint. Excess weight is a known risk factor for heart disease including high blood pressure, stroke and heart attack as well as diabetes, some cancers and others. Excess weight may also raise the risk for physical discomfort and mobility issues. Weight that is focused on the middle of the body, especially around the abdomen is associated with fatty liver, a condition that raises the risk of liver cancer.

But, there are some people who are overweight who have normal blood readings and no sign of disease at all according to Poretsky. A recent study has also found that overweight people who have reached age eighty five or older may be protected from injuries incurred from falls than their thinner peers. Poretsky and others point out that motivation to workout and to eat right is a difficult thing to find but being fat shamed makes it even more difficult. The point of fat acceptance, at least in most cases, is to end the judgement and the acrimony and to allow people to live their lives, healthy at any size.

"keeping their vileness as quiet as possible" - OH COME ON. We've got bigger fish to fry in the USA than worrying about how fat people feel about themselves.
