Can Your Shoes Be Making You Fat: How the Shoes You Wear Can Change How Your Body Works

We've all seen the ads. The claim is simple: if you wear this pair of shoes to walk or to do your daily activities, you can tone your hips, thighs and buttocks without having to do major time in the gym or other major changes. The problem, however, turns out that those very shoes may be causing more problems with your body's mechanics than they are helping and they are not the only shoe problems.

The so called "rocker" shoes, designed with a built up sole, work on the premise that the instability forces more of your leg muscles to be engaged with each step. Originally designed for patients with foot pain, they may actually may cause it if you are not careful. According to the Consumer Product Safety Commission, these shoes have a long list of injuries and complaints including tendinitis, pain, broken bones and dislocated hips. In addition, one manufacturer of these shoes, Reebok, has issued over twenty five million dollars in refunds after it was revealed that many of the benefits claimed for their version were inflated. In lab tests, wearers were shown to engage their lower body muscles less while wearing the rocker shoes than they did when they were wearing other shoes or when barefoot. Over forty percent of women surveyed reported at least some pain or injuries from wearing these shoes.

Other shoes can also cause problems. Flat shoes, like the ballet style flats or other casual shoes can also cause a number of injuries to their wearers. In a lab test, the women who wore this style of shoes put an estimated twenty five percent more force with each step that they took. Because they do not have support or internal cushioning, flats can also cause problems such as plantar fasciitis, a hard to treat condition marked by a painful, burning sensation along the sole of the foot.

High heels, usually the first to be blamed for foot and leg problems can shorten the muscles of the calf, sometimes permanently. Heels made the person wearing them walk up to twenty percent slower which lowered their calorie burn enough to potentially gain as many as five pounds in a year. In addition, excessively high heels increases the stress on the kneecaps by as much as two hundred percent, increasing the risk of serious injuries to those joints and may hasten permanent damage that can lead to the need for knee replacement surgery in some women.

This doesn't surprise me. It annoys my boyfriend to no end when we go out and I'm wearing heels. He's constantly saying, "you're walking to slow." and I simply tell him, "yes, but I look good." :)

I once dated a man that said "hurry up" I smiled and said "Honey. A Goddess never hurries." He never said another word about it.

There is actually a workout that is done in high heels- doctors everywhere cringed when they heard about it. It didn't really catch on, of course because it is unsafe!

Amie, ouch! Working on losing weight and learning about shoes making you fat made me laugh -- and then think! Not such a bad thing for me that high heels just don't work. Now I won't ever try them again after this!! blessings, Cynthia
