According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, there are more than thirty million American men over the age of twenty who are overweight, many of them obese. But, if you were to turn on the television, listen to the radio or look at a magazine, you would think that the only people with weight issues are women. The majority of ad revenue is spent on luring women to buy this product or try that diet plan while most ignore men completely. Finally, there are newer ads which are being written toward and geared toward attracting men. The new Weight Watchers ad, for instance, tells men that it is okay for them to diet and then makes fun of some of their previous, more female centric ads.
But, the dieting industry might be backing a losing pony when compared to the numbers of men versus women in terms of trying to lose weight. While nearly two thirds of all women are reportedly starting or in the midst of a "diet" on any given day, the numbers for dieting men are much lower. In a recent study, only one quarter of overweight men were trying to diet or at least change some of their eating habits. The number for obese men was even lower. While there are men on shows like the Biggest Loser, the average man at home is just not showing any interest in making the changes he needs to make to get into shape once and for all.
Men have not felt the immense pressures to achieve a thin body like women have for some time, but that is starting to change as well. The CDC reports that the number for young boys and men who have eating disorders is climbing thanks to changes in public personalities and role models. Governor Chris Christie of New Jersey has lng battled his weight in the public eye with many thinking that he was not pushed to run for the GOP's presidential nomination purely based on his weight. Christie denied having had any interest in the run.
Gone are the tough but pudgy actors of the past, replaced by buff, ripped god like creatures that ripple with muscle and not an ounce of body fat. Men are starting to see the painful message that they too need to lose weight and now the dieting industry is going to help to drive that message home.
