More Research Links Vitamin D Deficiency to Weight Gain Especially In Older Women

A number of research studies have linked Vitamin D deficiency to weight. The latest links weight gain to insufficient levels of this nutrient, especially in older women. A study by the Kaiser Permanente Center for Health Research has linked lower levels of Vitamin D to slow and consistent weight gain. Dr. Erin LeBlanc, an endocrinologist and researcher cautions that this does not establish a clear link, but does strengthen the correlation between the two. LeBlanc said that almost eighty percent of women in the United States are deficient in Vitamin D.

The study, part of the Journal of Women Health Study, looked at 4600 women all ages sixty five or older. None of the women were using diet or exercise to lose weight but most did manage to stay within the range of their starting weight during the course of the study. Some of the women, however, gained more than five percent of their starting body weight and even more had actually lost that same amount of weight during the study's period.

Vitamin D, which comes primarily from the sunlight but also comes from a number of other food sources is used by the body to help maintain strong bones and lean muscle mass. It is also used for the health of the central nervous system. While many people are not getting enough of it, there are cautions against getting too much as well as it can become toxic. Symptoms of Vitamin D toxicity can include vomiting and loss of appetite.

There are a number of conflicting guidelines for Vitamin D making it even more confusing for the average person. The US Preventative Services Task Force has cautioned that women in their post menopause years who are otherwise healthy may not need either Vitamin D or calcium supplementation, mainly because neither has been proven to prevent or slow the progress of osteoporosis. On the other hand, the Institute of Medicine suggests a supplement of 600 international units (IU) every day for those who are seventy and below. People who are older than seventy should take slightly more, 800 IU.

Critics of the study pointed out the same thing that LeBlanc included in his own statement- there is no clear link established between the Vitamin D deficiency and weight gain nor is there a link between supplementation and weight loss. Further research will continue to explore how the body uses Vitamin D to achieve or maintain weight.
