What is obesity?

Obesity is medically defined as a condition whereby a person is twenty percent above the recommended weight. This weight is determined by establishing the body mass index of a person. The body mass index takes into consideration two main factors so as to calculate the maximum recommended weight for a specific person; these factors are weight and height. Obesity is a big global problem as it has diverse effects on both an individual and the entire population. Among the negative effects of obesity is its likelihood to increase vulnerability to life threatening diseases such as hypertension, heart attacks and diabetes.Another negative effect of obesity is it limits mobility and makes a person generally inactive and lazy this is because moving around becomes a difficult task that causes strain to the obese person. High prevalence of obesity in a population leads to inactive people who cannot be productive and contribute to the development and growth of such a society. In the United states, obesity is a big health and nutrition problem and statistically it is only getting worse.

There are several factors that have contributed to the prevalence of obesity in the united states. The principal factor that has caused widespread obesity in the united states is poor nutrition mostly caused by consumption of an imbalanced diet. Majority of Americans consume a diet that mostly constitutes of fast foods and sugary foods mostly ice cream and frozen yogurt. These fast foods are have low nutritional value and do not serve the body any dietary purpose. Some of the commonly consumed fast foods constitute of high fat content, high starch and additional processing artificial chemicals that are meant to preserve these fast foods. These fast foods constitute a large part of what forms the diet of most american citizens and this is slowly killing a nation by making its people obese.

However, this situation is not irrecoverable as there is still hope for those who are obese and those who are approaching this condition due to poor diet consumption. In order to deal with obesity, prevention is a key aspect to keep in mind. This can be achieved through consumption of a balanced diet and observation of a high level of personal discipline. Good diet consists of consuming all the nutrients needed by the body in balanced proportions, these are proteins, carbohydrates and vitamins. In addition to this it is necessary to keep the body fit by working out regularly, shed calories and burn fat. There is solace for obese people in the united states, as the weight can be shed provided a person is motivated enough to take practical steps to change their lifestyle. Eradicating obesity requires personal discipline and proper nutrition through consumption of a balanced diet.
