Oh Poor Plumbo, The Insufferable Smug Attitude Of A Former Fatty

No offense to groups like Weight Watchers, but there is one area that this and similar groups overlooks with their weight loss programs. Once some people have lost the weight and hit their goal, once they are "former fatties" they morph into something new. For some people it is something happy and glorious. For others though, there is a serious problem. Those former fatties turn into the horrible, fat shaming people they themselves hated when they were overweight, but at much more serious levels. They go from struggling fatties to smug and condescending people, sometimes so insufferable that the people around them admit to trying to sabotage them.

This is one with personal resonance for me. My great aunt had set her goal of fifty pounds of weight loss over the course of several months. Her first few milestone celebrations were great and everyone was so proud of her. At roughly the twenty pounds lost mark, something happened though. She stopped being just happy and satisfied with her weight loss efforts and became something of a little monster. No one could put a single morsel into their mouth without a know it all lecture about calories, fat grams and other information being hurled at them. All family events, normally focused in some way around food were now nothing but a tension filled, potential war just begging to happen.

Even worse, this aunt took her smugness on the road. She was nearing her goal now and her sense of superiority had reached critical mass. Out in public, she would point at fatties of varying sizes and say "Oh, poor plumbo" and then discuss what they were doing wrong with no information to support her assertions. She was loud, she was insufferable and no one wanted to be with her at home and they certainly did not want to be with her in public.

People started buying her "gifts" that were nothing more than underhanded ways of making her regain the weight as if that would totally shut her up. This was an opinionated woman no matter what her weight was, she was merely more adamant about how right she was now. It was wrong for her to be like that but it was equally wrong for people to try to sabotage her.

So, dear Weight Watchers, Jenny Craig and all others, please add some information to your clients about how they talk to others once they have hit their goals. People should want to celebrate the weight loss victories of their friends and family members not hide from them.

Interesting article. I have never run across a situation like the one mentioned in the article. I have however found myself in a similar situation. I was a smoker for many years and one day decided I was going to quit. Well once that goal was achieved I tried to get my friend to quit. He would always say that "There's nothing worse than a reformed smoker" Phaeton
