Risks Of Being Vegetarian

To understand the risks of being vegetarian it is important to firstly identify just exactly what vegetarianism is. Being a vegetarian by definition means abstaining from consuming meat, seafood, poultry and indeed the flesh of any other animal; vegetarians may also abstain from eating products that are a by product of the slaughter of animals, these including gelatine and rennet.

However, there is more than one form of vegetarianism and these include strict vegetarianism or veganism where no animal products in any form are consumed such as honey, eggs and dairy In fact a vegan or true vegetarian will not wear leather or even polish shoes with a polish that is derived from goose fat. Other less strict vegetarians may eat fish or occasionally poultry, but will abstain from eating the flesh of mammals. What is clear though is that abstaining from eating the nutrients found in such foods can have a negative impact on health.

Risks associated with a vegetarian diet

Inadequate protein intake:

Protein is an important part of any healthy diet and it is necessary for healthy living as well as many vital processes in the body. Synthesis of protein will give slow release energy, and proteins are vital for fuelling the body without filling it full of unhealthy carbs. So, when you take away protein from the diet, there are many risks such as weight gain, lethargy and general malaise. Although a vegetarian can find protein in alternative sources to eggs and red meat such as in pulses, education is a must and many people simply unknowingly cut out protein altogether from the diet when they choose to become a vegetarian.

Risk of allergy and intolerance to lactose

Following a vegetarian diet can have profound negative affects on health and these include intolerance to lactose and lactose products. A vegetarian who cuts out virtually all dairy will often find intolerance to dairy develops when they are on the road to veganism. Although some people are not disturbed by their inability to stomach diary, cutting out dairy is once again cutting out vital nutrients in the diet.

Risk of increased cholesterol

Although many people may associate becoming a vegetarian with following a healthy diet or with losing weight, the truth is often the opposite. By cutting out high energy foods such as red meat and in some cases dairy, a vegetarian will often replace them with high carbohydrate foods that are full of saturated vegetable fats. Too many bad carbohydrates in the diet will soon have negative effects on the individual such as weight gain and increased cholesterol level.

Remedies

Consulting with a dietician: If you wish to become a vegetarian or are already abstaining from eating meat and animal products you should consult a dietician to ensure that you are still consuming a healthy and balanced diet. A healthy diet plan will ensure that your body receives all the necessary nutrients it requires, and where necessary you may be advised to take supplements too.

Conclusion

Becoming a vegetarian is not a decision that one should take lightly, and it is not a suitable option for someone who intends to lose weight. Abstaining from eating animal products should a moral decision, and one that is accompanied by advice from a dietician.
