The Many Ways That Excess Fat is Dangerous to Your Body

Visceral fat, the fat that accumulates deep within your body is potentially doing more damage than other, closer to the surface pockets of fat. In recent years, visceral fat, especially that which gathers around the abdomen has been discussed as more dangerous than all over body fat. That fat, which often causes problems with the internal organs has been linked with very serious conditions, depending on its location.

Fat in and around the liver, for instance can raise the cholesterol as well as the blood sugar level. If left unchecked, this excess fat may also increase damage to the liver, potentially leading to liver failure. But, fatty liver disease is not the only possible problem with this deep lying fat. In women, visceral fat can accumulate around the ovaries which may increase free fatty acid in the blood which may keep a potential egg from developing correctly which increases the risk of infertility. In the event that the egg does develop and release, it may not be usable- in that it might not be able to be fertilized. These damaged eggs if fertilized may lead to embryos that do not develop into a viable fetus.

For the heart and cardiovascular system, fat has always been known to be a major problem. In the most recent studies involving visceral fat and its effects on the heart, researchers found that atherosclerosis, commonly referred to as hardening and narrowing of the arteries as well as blood clots and other circulation hampering issues were increased because of visceral fat as well as inflammation which increased the size of the individual blood cells.

All of these problems in the body are serious, however, visceral fat also causes serious problems with the brain as well. Researchers found that people who have the highest waist to hip ratio were more likely to have a much lower brain volume which increases problems with memory and learning.

Researchers warn that BMI, weight and other measurements may not be the best indicator of visceral fat and the potential damages that it can cause. Instead, they suggest using triglyceride numbers to gauge the risk factors for visceral fat. Other people, especially those who have more risk factors may consider other tests to make sure that their arteries are clear as well as liver function tests to watch for signs of damage to that organ. And, in the meantime, people, whether they have surface or deep lying fat, should be encouraged to work on losing that weight.
