I get e-mails everyday with people asking me to give them tips to lose belly fat. Well, I'll start saying that you should focus on losing overall weight, not only the belly fat. I'm saying this for an obvious reason, to lose belly fat alone is impossible, as it's impossible to spot reduce. That's one of the biggest myths there are. The weight loss industry is full of lies and misinformation, so be careful with what you read and who you trust.
Another good example of spot reducing would be those abs machines that make people believe that if they used those gadgets, they will get their 6 pack abs. What a lie! If you do crunches or another ab exercise, the only muscle you will build are your abs, but if you've got abdominal fat, even though it will help you a little, it won't make a difference, you will not get your 6 pack. Why? Because you need to reduce your overall fat first!
Ok, now you know all this, I'll give you some tips to reduce your overall weight, which will make you lose belly fat.
First, you have to check your current body fat percentage and your waist circumference size. You may ask me why am I giving you this two measures? Because your goal should be reducing your current body fat percentage, which will make you reduce your waist circumference size. That way, you will eventually lose belly fat.
Then, to check your body fat percentage you should use a body fat caliper. Maybe your gym has one, maybe not, in which case I recommend you to buy one. Check if they are accurate, because there are many cheap calipers that are inaccurate, and will make things worse.
Once you have a body fat caliper, take measurements of different parts of your body (i.e. chest, waist, arms, thighs, and so on) and on the same day of the week, so that you will be able to compare your progress. Furthermore, check your weight on a weekly basis. That way, once you've got your weight and your body fat percentage, you will be able to know how much fat are you carry on. Let's say that you weight 250 pounds, with a body fat percentage of 25%, then you have 62.5 pounds of fat. This will help you to lose belly fat, because you will have a defined goal of 62.5 pounds of fat to lose.
If you combine this weekly measurements with the correct training and diet, you will lose belly fat in a matter of weeks. The goal here is to create a calorie deficit, by reducing your calorie intake through diet, and increasing your daily calorie burning by doing some cardio and strength training (remember that if you develop muscle you will burn calories even though you may weight more).
In conclusion, losing weight can be done in a matter of weeks, but if done right. You need to be consistent, and set achievable goals and work towards them. Take in consideration everything we talked about in here, and you will not believe yourself once you lose all the extra pounds you've had before.
