Weight Loss, Costs

It is worrying and sad to hear that demand for surgery for weight loss in the United Kingdom has vastly increased in just a year. It appears that in the United Kingdom the demand for having weight reduction surgery has grown so great, that in some areas, people are now being refused the treatment.

It seems that to qualify for NHS funded weight loss surgery a person has to be considered to have a potentially life threatening obesity. You have to have a body mass index of 40 and also have a weight related medical condition such as high blood pressure or diabetes.

Weight loss surgery is an emotive subject and although it is widely available, it should not be seen as a necessity or the answer to the growing epidemic of rising obesity in our population.

There will be many people that feel that weight loss surgery should not be funded at all. After all it’s their fault they got so big isn’t it! The other side of the argument is that society and our environment have played a big part in our rising levels of obesity and it is not just down to one individual’s eating habits.

Whatever you think about weight loss surgery, it does provide a solution and is considered to be a success and a cure for the morbidly obese.

At present there are 2 types of surgery that are available for reduction of weight and these are gastric band surgery and gastric bypass surgery. Of course there are risks with having the weight loss surgery and it is only undertaken as a last resort and when other weight loss methods have been tried.

Surgeons say that bariatric surgery costs about 10,000 pounds per person. That is a huge cost to the health service, but apparently obese patients can end up costing more money long term. This is because of the like hood of them needing medications and treatments for their other associated medical conditions that obesity is linked to, such as in the cost of treating diabetes.

If you do not qualify for the NHS surgery then you can choose to pay and in the United Kingdom, private clinics can charge up to about 15,000 pound. This cost has led some people to look for treatment in other countries where the cost is significantly less.

As things are and with the growing problem of obesity then it would seem that the United Kingdom NHS health system will simply not be able to cope with the demand for future weight loss surgery and other alternatives will have to be sought
