Last month, the International Olympic Committee visited the Olympic campus in London for the final inspection before the Olympics. The committee declared London ready to receive the world's most talented athletes.
At the time of their visit, there were 119 days to go. Now, there are only 104 days.
How does the committee know that the facilities and city are ready?
Over 30 sporting events take place in the facilities designed to host the vent. One of the upcoming test events will take place in 10 days, the 23rd of April 2012. It will be a men's football (soccer) play-off tournament.
Other events that are yet to take place include synchronized swimming on the 18th through the 22nd, the Visa International Hockey Tournament on May 2-6, and an exciting event called 2012 Hours to Go, which will take place May 5th. At this special event, there will be sports, stunts, and other entertainment. 40,000 people will be able to attend. Only one will be walk away with a very special prize.
When do the dates take place?
The XXX Olympic games will take place between July 27, 2012 through August 12, 2012.
This will be London's third time hosting the games. The first time London hosted the games was in 1908. The 1908 games were fourth modern games and the third held outside of Athens, Greece.
The next time they were to hold the games was in 1944. However, World War II prevented that. Instead, the games were rescheduled for 1948 in London.
Which athletes are going to represent their countries at the Olympics?
I went to the United States Olympic Training Center today. While on the tour of that campus, one of the athletes who will not make the 2012 Olympics, guided us through the campus. She said that there are still many competitions that must take place before the athletes know that they will have the privilege of representing their countries.
While we did not get to see very many athletes training since it was the lunch hour, we did see a few. We were told that the athletes are training very hard and preparing for upcoming competitions.
There are only a few buildings visitors are allowed to enter. We were able to see the weight training center, the wrestling training center, the gymnastics center, and the visitor's center from the inside. If you want to see the Olympic pool, you will have to peer through the windows.
Should you have the opportunity to visit the Olympic Training Center in Southern Colorado before the Olympics, the best time to see athletes in action is at the time of the 9 AM tour.
Rebecca, Oh my! Olympics again... didn't we just have the summer Olympics yesterday? Thanks for a heads up in a fun and interesting way. blessings, Cynthia
I hope to be able to go to the Olympics some day. The closest they've been to me was when they were in Salt Lake City, which is only a day's drive from here. The timing was wrong for my situation. It was pretty exciting even from here.
Your article is the first mention of the Olympics that I recall hearing. It does seem to be low key for such a big event
Every so often, my kids hear something. Maybe it's because they've got to the OTC on field trips earlier this year. Whatever the reason, I listen to the news on the radio regularly and haven't heard anything. Maybe when they hit the 90 day mark? or when the athletes have secured their spots?
Yes Kevin I had almost forgotten this event was upcoming, there seems to be less hype about it this year than the last four years ago. I wonder why?
Good question. I don't know why I haven't heard much either.
The hype is definitely less this year than in the past, I still have not heard of any of our athletes that have qualified for selection.
Perhaps the media coverage will increase in the next few weeks? Maybe all the tickets for the events have been purchased, so they don't need to advertise. Whatever the reason, I"m surprised I haven't heard or seen much, especially since I live in one of the few cities where there is an Olympic Training Center.
Nice article Rebecca...I had completely forgot about the Olympics..thanks for th reminder
Sure thing! Now that I've been there, I am looking forward to watching them more than ever! Have a great weekend and thank you for commenting.
