If you've ever browsed Craigslist you have probably noticed the Craigslist personals section. You might have ignored it and went on browsing the other parts of the site. You might have even looked at the postings in the personals section. If you are like me you took one more step and replied to or posted a Craigslist personal.
When I first decided to post on Craigslist I was excited at the prospect of being able to meet women on Craigslist since it's free. I wrote the best Craigslist personal that I knew how to write. I thought it was pretty good for my first time, but after posting it I was sorely disappointed. I received a bunch of spam emails from people trying to get me to join age verification or adult webcam/dating sites. Needless to say, I was quickly disillusioned and disappointed with the Craigslist dating scene.
I then decided to email the women who had posted in the women for men(w4m) personals section on craigslist. I emailed a bunch of personals, but received only a few replies. The replies I did get were from spammers once again trying to get me to join the sites that they were promoting. I quickly grew tired of this as well and I was left wondering "Are there any real women on Craigslist or are they all just fake?"
More Failed Attempts:
After about a week or so I quit trying. A couple of months after my initial attempt at Craigslist dating I tried my luck again. This time around I got one or two replies but the interaction quickly died and I never met anyone. I once again became disappointed and quit replying to and posting Craigslist personals. However, every couple of months I would find myself browsing posting, and replying to Craigslist personals.
After much trial and error I eventually started seeing a pattern emerge. The personals that got the most responses were the ones where I was silly and playful. The same was true for replying to personals. The emails that were playful and silly got more replies than my serious emails.
Humor is the Key:
In my opinion the best craigslist personals are funny ones. Your goal when writing or responding to a Craiglist personal should be to make the other person laugh. If you can make the other person laugh they're far more likely to respond to your email and/or post.
Most posts on craigslist read something like this: "Hi my name is so and so. I am 5'6", I weigh 165 pounds. I have blond hair and blue eyes. In my free time I like hiking and hanging out with friends."
Don't believe me? Open up another web browser and browse through the personals. Believe me now?
A lot of people think they have to be serious in their replies. You don't and it's much better to be the exact opposite. If you only use exaggeration in your post then you are light years ahead of 90% of the posts on Craigslist.
Scope Out the Competition:
One thing I recommend you do is check out the competition. If you're a man looking for a woman(m4w) then check out what other men have posted. Which ones do you find funny? If you find one that you think is really funny, mimic it and see if you get a better response rate than your other postings. Be sure to check out personals in different states and cities as well. If you're observant you'll be writing better personal ads in no time.
Another thing that might help you is writing a post that your competition would respond to. Continuing with the previous example, if you're a man looking for a woman(m4w) post an ad as a woman looking for a man(w4m). Once you do this you'll see the sheer volume of emails that women get from men and how unoriginal and boring most of these emails are.
In conclusion, if you want to write the best craigslist personal or the best email in response to a craigslist person be funny and original. Laughter and originality beat out serious and boring any day.
