What People May Not Understand About Online Education

When you mention that you are going to college, people assume you mean a brick and mortar school and for many people, that is right. However, for millions of others, going to school means logging on to their home or a public computer and going to a virtual classroom. There are dozens of reasons that a person might choose online education over the more traditional route including the ability to actually fit the classes into their own schedule.

Adults, especially adults with children, may find it difficult to find time to not only get to classes but to do the required homework that the classes require. Imagine having to care for young children, go to work full time and still find time to write a ten page paper on early Elizabethan literature. When would you sleep or eat or breathe? Between running back and forth from work to home to daycare and shopping, not many people have the extra time to wedge a class in there as well. Plus, the sad reality is that most classes are scheduled at times that may not work for your schedule at all.

Online education is a viable solution, but not the perfect one for everyone. It requires some investigation before getting started. It is vitally important that you find the right school, not only for the program that you are looking for but for the school itself. Before enrolling in any program or single course, make sure that the school you are interested in is accredited. In addition, before going through the entire process of earning a degree, make sure that it will be accepted in the state in which you live or hope to be employed in. For instance, if you are earning a degree in psychology in Ohio, make sure that your online education will allow you to apply for the proper licenses and certification once you have completed your education. If not, then you are spending a lot of time, money and energy on a worthless piece of paper.

This type of education is good for people who learn by reading and finding out information on their own rather than those who like to have the information given to them, led to facts by the professor or instructor. If you are visual learner, online education may not work as effectively for you. Some schools do have online seminars that give additional information that supplements the lessons for the week and can be valuable, especially for anyone who is planning to go further into their education and may be transitioning to a more traditional school.

I agree with your list of important things to check out before enrolling into an online school and apply for a degree program. Just as this list is important for online schools and programs, it is also important to do the same for brick and mortar schools. Great article!
