Let’s take a quick glance at strategy games you can find on the internet. As with most categories of games online, these can be broken down into more distinct types. Our list will be broken down to Turn-based, Protect/Subdue games, Tower Defense Games, and RPG’s which stands for “role playing games”. Whatever category you choose to play, you will find that they are all similar in some ways, and before we break them down further, we should discuss what makes a game fall into the broader category in the first place. The primary attribute that these games share would be a higher goal for which to strive. You would go along a specific route and make well thought out decisions along in order to reach the goal. As in most other games, there will always be something in the way that would cause you to react or respond in different ways or maybe even change your strategy to get to that main goal. This brings us to our discussion of the subcategories and what makes them different from one another.
Turn-based Games is our first subcategory strategy games and are easily self explanatory. You take turns with the CP and makes decisions on each turn whether to attack, prepare for the next turn, or respond to a previous attack. Some more distinct decisions to choose from could be utilizing upgrades for defensive or offensive components, or preparing an attack for the next turn. These can also be included within the RPG or Protect/Subdue subcategories in that these two sometimes incorporate a turn-based player integration.
Now let’s take a deeper look into the Tower Defense genre as we continue our discussion. As the title implies, you use towers to defend something. That something can be a headquarters, bunker full of helpless citizens, or a precious treasure. When it comes down to it, what you’re defending could possibly be anything that fits the strategy game in question. In a Tower Defense game, you make decisions on what kind of turrets to use to fight the invaders. They employ different means of attack and cost various quantities of credits. After you buy your stationary weapons, you make them stronger to better keep the enemies at bay. You start out with a certain amount of credits to build your first set of towers, then you earn more as you defeat more and more enemies. These games also vary from scenario to scenario and can range anywhere from a computer virus to a caveman. Anyways, these baddies come in waves, and your task is to do what you can during these waves to fend them off with your towers.
The Protect/Subdue strategy games genre is also self explanatory. You start with a base of some kind, build resources, and branch out to strategically take over and defend other bases. RPG’s make up a category in which you may control one or more characters that have different abilities, and make choices on how to develop each character as you progress in the game. You can spend points to upgrade the stats, find better accessories, or further develop specific attacks for your team. In order to do this, you have to defeat a variety of enemies, level up, and collect all kinds of valuables.
From what we’ve discussed, you should now have a good idea of what kinds of strategy games you have to choose from online. Your task now is go and play them!
