Importance Of Planning

How many times have you missed the bus? Do you often get tensed about last minute preparations? How are you organized with your schedules? Your answers to these questions may reveal how much planned you are in your activities.

I know of many people who reach the airport just minutes before the check-in closes. They all would have planned their trip well in advance. Got all the travel documents ready with them at least a day before the journey. They would have packed their stuff (or by somebody else) at least few hours before they start their journey. But why do they have to rush to the airport? Probably they would not have anticipated a traffic jam or they would not have left their office on time so that they can reach the airport at least within the stipulated time before the check-in closes.

So, what does this show? It is Planning that has gone wrong with them – may be not with most of the things that they had to do, but with at least one or two which either did not work according to their planning or they did not plan it properly.

Imagine you had to face a situation like this. You might have missed some important stuff that you were supposed to take with you during your trip. May be you forgot to switch off power at home which would run until you come back costing you a lot of money. You probably would have forgotten to close all doors and windows – not all places are safe at all times. You would even leave your wallet at home or office and proceed to the airport and realize only once you reach there. By that time it would have been too late to go back and collect it. There are many more things which you may forget in the last minute rush.

I have also seen many people who are not at all bothered about proper planning and who do things at the 11th hour. They may not be worried about traffic jam or other possible obstacles that would put them under risky situations. But to their luck, things would have gone mostly when they do so. Still, planning and execution makes a difference rather than doing things just like that.

It is quite natural for our brain to work abnormally while under pressure. We would like to organize things and have a proper planning for everything what we do. Somehow that happens very rarely in real life. But have you ever imagined about the pressure that you would be putting on others just because of your carelessness? A number of people would have waited only for your arrival to start some function. What about their valuable time? Being punctual in your commitments is a very good sign indeed. Not everyone can do this especially in this busy world.

Some programmes start very late keeping the chief guests as well as the other invitees waiting for hours together. Unavoidable circumstances are acceptable but that should not be an excuse. Plan what you have to do and how things should be scheduled in a programme, days in advance and accordingly create a time plan.

In a business, planning is very much important for the success. Planning can reduce a lot of mistakes. We can control the business much more efficiently with proper planning. The resource utilization can be more productive by proper planning. It therefore is evident that without proper planning a business can sometimes fail. If you are a manager, planning will increase your effectiveness in managing tasks. With proper planning, you are able to set your priorities and thus focus on what is important.

Here are some simple steps that you can follow to avoid last minute frustration:

• Make a list of things that you have to do

• Prioritize the action plan

• Put deadlines for each action

• If possible try to delegate works

• Never wait for the last moment to do things

• Review the action plan to make sure that you have not missed any actions

• Try to be little early than being late

Plan your day and avoid any frustration.

I end up making sloppy mistakes when I do things at the last minute. That's why I like to allocate a reasonable amount of time to get things done.

You have some very good ideas. Another thing I have learned is to get things done in a reasonable amount of time.

Thanks for your comments. I see a lot of people who do things without any planning and end up in last minute mixup.
