There are a few important reasons for working on your home organization ideas. Aside from your personal comforts, conveniences and tastes, there are the safety factors.
Should there be a fire or other disaster, you need to be able to get out quickly and easily, with your vital personal data in tow. Your vital documents can be scanned and kept on a USB stick for easy transport. Password protected!
Stop Procrastinating Now
Don't get all stressed out about this. If you are a pack rat, or feel sentimental about items that are really no longer relevant to your daily life, you don't have to suffer all kinds of separation anxiety from your "stuff".
If you have boxes or disorganized drawers of family pictures, for example, put it on the list for sorting out. After throwing away - or sharing the "doubles" , decide whether you will scan the rest and put on a CD, memory stick, or both, and/or get them sorted into a beautiful album that will not take up much space.
Plan to enjoy this kind of activity. At whatever appropriate time, set aside a day to relax and delight in your collection. Play some good music, get a friend to hang out and keep you going, or make your dinner while you are busy.
Magazine Collections
I know you still intend to read that one article you are keeping each issue for. Almost all will be available somewhere on the internet. Important magazine tips:
- throw out any that are more than 2 months old
- renew your subscriptions to be electronic, and
- get the new issues on your computer or electronic reader
THROW THEM OUT. Or, donate the more recent ones to an assisted living home library, or a hospital/hospice library. If you are under any type of deadline, do the easiest thing with your available time and energy in consideration.
Home Office Organizers
For many of us, our home office is one shelf, one file drawer, or one pile or shoe box. Here are some easy tips for sorting papers:
- always throw out impersonal mail immediately
- open bills, keep the relevant pages and throw/shred the rest every day
- pay on line if you are comfortable with that (I'm not)
- keep vital documents (passport, Social Security file, car file, insurance files, mortgages, leases, birth certificate etc.) in a separate file box that you can grab and run with.
- if needed, get a 2 or 4 drawer file cabinet - takes up little space
- use a small mail organizer for bills coming due, and file or shred the front page as needed
Getting Rid Of Stuffed Animals - How Necessary Is This?
This is not just for young women. Why wouldn't anyone want to keep these cuddly souvenirs? If you can put up a high shelf in your bedroom for all these cute fuzzy critters and dolls to sit on, by all means keep them. You could string some invisible nylon line to secure them all.
Just as childrens' bedrooms use a hammock strung up in the corner of the room for stuffed animals, you could too. Just keep in mind that they could be a fire hazard.
However, if you have a hundred of them and you live in a small apartment - maybe you will like this tip. Take some family portraits. Group them and take some pictures. And then give them away. I understand that throwing them into a dumpster is too big an emotional stretch. And I'm all for recycling.
These are just a few tips to help with your organization ideas for home living. If you have enjoyed this article and are getting some enthusiasm worked up, then I don't need to remind you to stop procrastinating now.
