Bondi Beach is well regarded as one of the most popular beaches in the world. It certainly is the most popular beach in Australia. And I can understand why, having lived in Bondi Beach off and on for most of my life. About 40 odd years ago, whenever I felt like going for a walk alone at 1, 2, 3 and 4 o'clock in the morning I just would.
I am not sure I would do that today (although, just recently I was speaking with a friend who feels totally comfortable walking on Bondi Beach any time of the day or night). It is just that Bondi Beach is very different today. Certainly a lot busier today. So, what is so wonderful about Bondi Beach? Because Bondi Beach is so familiar to me, sometimes it is hard to describe its' wonders. But when I start reflecting on it, without any doubt it is the beauty and the way it is laid out.
I can start at the North end (where the kiddies pool is) and than walk along the water's edge all the way along the rocks to Coogee. All along the beach and all the way along the rocks the sights are just unbelievable. From the famous Icebergs through Tamarama, Bronte Beach, Clovelly and than Coogee.
I not only explore the sea, the ships afar, and allow myself to tune to the sounds of the pounding of the waves onto the rocks. This has to be the most refreshing and invigorating walks for me . Because of its many steps, and it is reasonably arduous and can be a bit of a stretch.
But again it can be done at your own pace, and depending on the amount of time available you don't have to go all the way to Coogee. Having travelled and lived in many other parts of the world, apart from it's beauty one of the things I most appreciate about Bondi Beach is it's cleanliness. It certainly is not the whitest sandy beach in Australia, or the world, but it is clean and safe. In WA and Qld at least I have found whiter sand. But the thing about Bondi Beach is that it is so beautiful, and has these incredible apartments and homes along the foreshore. I just love walking along the beach at twilight when the lights begin to twinkle along the Esplanade with its many restaurants and cafes.
I find all this still an exciting adventure. Really, it never stopped to amaze me how much I have enjoyed living at Bondi Beach.
