Air Shows

While in the service to our great nation and country, I was afforded the opportunity to attend several air shows. I have seen air shows in England, South Carolina, Florida, and North Carolina. They are an impressive display of varied types of cargo airplanes, attack aircraft, fighter aircraft and helicopters. I have even been awed by some of the world's biggest and most impressive airplanes. I have witnessed flying by many aerial demonstration teams from several different countries.

I once got to see the Royal Air Force's "Vulcan" fly and the Red Arrows demonstration team. They are pretty impressive to watch. I've seen the C-5 "Galaxy"and a C-17 "Globe Master" both fly in air shows too. I've been fortunate to have seen the USAF Thunderbird and USN Blue Angels fly more than once. I have also witnessed the flying of the Italian Air Force's Frecce Tricolori demonstration team and the Canadian Air Force's Snow Birds.

I was there when President George W. Bush visited Charlotte, NC a couple of times, and I got to see Air Force One and the Marine One Helicopter. Some of my friends got to go aboard the Air Force One of the Reagan administration and were very happy to see that it is still housed in San Bernadino, California. The NC Air National Guard members were invited to go to the Air Force Museum in Dayton, Ohio. I went on that trip and we got to see Wright Patterson AFB and the museum with hundreds of air planes, helicopters and some very famous air planes.

There was an original Wright Brothers Flyer and even an A-10A aircraft that I had done maintenance on at Myrtle Beach AFB in the late 1980's. It was really neat to see that aircraft and even neater was the fact that a fellow guardsman on the trip was the former Crew Chief on that plane and his name was still painted on the cockpit rail. The plane still had all the Myrtle Beach AFB 353FS decals and was pretty much still intact.

He was ecstatic that the plane was still there. It was he that had flown up for its decommissioning ceremony and put it inside the museum in the first place, after they shut down the base in 1993. He took many photos of himself and the retired aircraft that he so lovingly maintained for several years. I guess old airplanes never die they just go to the museum. The museum is the classiest and best equipped one I have visited. Second place belongs to the Naval Aviation Museum at NAS Pensacola, in Florida. In my opinion any way.

I so enjoyed the air shows and try to go to them when I can. They are great fun for the family and are mostly held on fantastically beautiful days. The flying is very exciting and the static display airplanes are opened to the public to walk through, look inside, walk around and touch. Several Air National Guard Units even have made mini C-130 modeled "planes" that drive the children around the flight line to give them a sense of what it would be like to taxi along a runway. The next time you have one nearby, visit the air show and have a fun day.

Good article Rodney...I live near Barksdale and get to attend the shows from time to time...Love to see the B-52's and A-10's work around the area...I think the A-10 unit is still there....I fish on the river and often see many other planes working in and out of Barksdale...Don't think they are part of Barksdale but even see some stealh units from time to time....Think I saw a Mig last year while fishing on the river... One highlight was getting to go on base when one of the Space Shuttles made a stop over while being piggy-backed from a California landing... I love to see our military craft in action...youtube has plenty...
