Ali Al Salem Ab, Kuwait

In 2004 and then again in 2005, I was stationed with the expeditionary forces in Kuwait. The base was being utilized as a launching point for AC-130's, Korean Air Force C-130's, Japanese C-130's and several USAF and ANG unit C-130's. The base was also being used to provide out of theater rest and relaxation services for the US Army and US Marines. These brave men and women were flown in for a couple of weeks to rest, relax, get hot showers, do their laundry, resupply, and eat hot meals.

As many as fifty of of America's finest at a time, were transported from the flight line by air conditioned buses up to main base. Most of them if not all, had not been out of the field, (read desert), for over three months. They were able to use many of the base facilities. The base had a swimming pool, a monster gym with racquet ball courts, free weights, and Nautilus style equipment. There were treadmills and a basket ball court. The base also had a base theater, a Pizza Hut trailer, a Subway trailer, and a coffee shop.

This base also had a barber shop, dry cleaners, souvenir shop, a Base Exchange, a huge chow hall, and a Recreation Center. The Rec Center got lots of visitors because they had three or four game consoles that you could sign out a game and controller to, and play for a couple of hours at a time. These we hooked up to large screen TV's and often they had contests going on to see who was the best at games like HALO and etc. The Rec Center held events like Bingo games and the infamous "fat suit" wrestling night every so often. This building housed the only Slushee machine in Kuwait. There was a DVD Shop to sign out DVDs and watch on a nearby Huge Screen TV. It must have been over 80". Once a month the local shopkeepers would hold a Bazaar on base and try to sell their wares. Mostly jewelery and other small items.

There were telephone centers and internet access computers for interacting with people back home, checking e-mail and other such things. Most of the buildings had air conditioning. There was a Base Chapel, Base Library, Linen Exchange, the Base Post Office, and the Base Medical Clinic. If you had eye issues or other specialized health concerns the nearest Military Hospital was forty-five minutes away.

Apart from the Main Base and Tent City, the flight line had little to offer. There was a small mobile trailer that got nick named the "SS Minnow" and it held about twelve or so people comfortably with a window ac unit. Outside of that there were bombed out Harden Aircraft Shelters with huge holes in the tops of them. (courtesy of the USA back in Desert Storm.) These HAS' provided shade during heavy heat cycles. The Leadership had some nice digs, but what else is new? (just kidding to all the Officers and Admin folks.) They were housed in brick buildings with ac and nice rest rooms with running water. The HAS' had a Port -A- Potty every other one or so I think.

The Flight Line had a small kitchen facility that served breakfast and lunch items through out the day. Gatorade and water were always available for us and the main chow hall had a great selection of ice cream available twenty four hours a day. Some of it was even Hagen~Dazs! Plenty of fruit and veggies, breakfast cereals and the like were available. This helped with keeping sane. The USAF went to great lengths to take care of its people. They also took care of other service members from other branches too.
