How to Hike Kilimanjaro

Ever wondered how to hike Kilimanjaro and what it takes to get fit and ready?. At a height of over 19,000 ft climbing Kilimanjaro is no Sunday stroll and a good deal of preparation is required. Kilimanjaro is the highest mountain in the world that you can walk up without the need for any serious climbing, although you will have to do a bit of scrambling at some points.

Guided tours

The only way to make the trip up Kilimanjaro is with a guided tour from a licensed company. Due to the popularity of the mountain there are many company's offering these tours and not all are going to give you a quality service so do your research because your success at reaching the summit and returning safely will depend on the level of support your receive from the people employed to get you there.

Preparation and Endurance

With the average trip up Kilimanjaro taking 7 days this is more about being able to maintain a constant slow pace day after day than speed. If you regularly enjoy mountain climbing on a smaller scale then you have a good head start with preparation but the distance involved on a hike up Kilimanjaro coupled with the extreme altitude can sometimes catch out even the fittest of climbers. Set yourself some long distance walking challenges to get a feel for walking up to 7-8 hrs every day and try to raise your overall fitness level as much as possible.

Altitude sickness fears

There is no way of telling if altitude sickness is going to effect you on your climb and I have personally always tried to forget about it and concentrate on putting one foot in front of the other. Your experienced guides will always be on the look out for any symptoms and any tour that is run properly will cover these with you before starting out. The tour should be well staffed so if one climber has a problem with altitude they can be escorted down the mountain (usually all it takes to cure the symptoms) leaving the rest of the group able to carry on.

The cost and doing it for charity

The cost of a hike is more than $2000 but a number of charity's run tours for Kilimanjaro where you are required to raise a set amount of money to pay for the climb and leave the charity with a profit to carry on their good works. This is an excellent way to get the trip of a lifetime basically free of charge as long as you can raise the money through donations. A quick search online will give a list of charity s that offer this and many other sponsored events.

Worth it?

For a once in a lifetime opportunity the time and effort climbing Kilimanjaro is defiantly worth it. Making sure you are with a well run organization will make the trip easier and more enjoyable.
