Smartphones are wonderful things, and whilst we use them for the lighter side of life, if we ever get in a tangle, they can also be used to get you out of some pretty sticky situations.
So if you are ever stuck in the wilderness with just your phone at hand, you can always use the following tips to help yourself out.
Compass App
Can’t figure out which way is which? Not to worry, open up the compass app on your phone and you’ll have a handy compass available at your fingertips to lead you to safety.
Maps
If a compass is too much work you can always check out the maps app to give you an exact location and a nearby look at what is where.
Knots App
If you need to build shelter, knots are vital, and luckily enough there are tons of knot apps available online, meaning you can use rope or vines to build your shelter.
BootPrint Pocket Survival App
Got no signal? Not to worry, the BootPrint Pocket Survival App tracks the last location you were in which offered you some signal, so you can backtrack and use the phone to call some help.
Wild Edibles App
This handy app helps you out if you’re starving, offering you a list of plenty of edible goodies from Mother Nature, and offers you advice on poisonous berries etc.
Flashlight
Super helpful overnight or when signaling for help in the dark, be careful not to use it too much as it will burn your battery away.
First Aid App
Covering anything from cuts and scrapes to broken bones, any first aid app will help you out if you need some medical attention when out in the wilderness.
Winter Survival App
If it isn't the warmest day on the calendar, the winter survival app could be a lifesaver, helping you survive through the snow and sleet.
Call Someone!
It’s an obvious one for sure, but if you are stuck with your phone in the middle of nowhere, why not give the emergency services a ring to come and save you?
But even if your phone isn't working it can still be useful, so follow these tips if you have a dud phone.
Start a fire
If your battery still has some charge you can use some wiring from the handset to start a fire by connecting the wire to the positive and negative ends of the battery.
Mirror Signal
Simple and easy to do if the sun is out, simply reflect the sunlight off the screen and point it toward a helicopter/plane to signal for help. You can help direct it by using your fingers as a sight by making the peace symbol.
Throw it at attacking Critters
In a last resort, and if you have a bigger phone, you could always throw your phone at some attacking wildlife, but that isn't to say I condone harming any animals.
Great read, might have to keep these tips in mind if I ever get lost somewhere!
