With today’s gold price per ounce many people have a new interest in facts about gold. I thought I’d give my thoughts about what I think are some of the more interesting facts about gold. Some of these facts about gold are really only educated guesses. Certain things cannot be proven. Such as, how much undiscovered gold is left on the planet? Does anyone really know the true answer? Some experts estimate the worlds gold deposits will be running low and the supply wont keep up with what is being consumed. And that could be within the next half century or so. Others say that only 6% to 11% of the earths gold has been discovered up to this point. Who is correct? The easy to find gold has been discovered. (not that there’s anything easy about mining gold). Although, when I go prospecting, I, along with many, many others are still looking for that bonanza!!
Who discovered Gold? The use of gold in our history goes back almost as far as history itself. Someone, at some point in time decided to pick up a piece of the shiny, beautiful metal and ever since then, we’ve had an undying obsession for the stuff. For thousands of years it has been used as an ornament of kings, a currency and standard for global currencies. More recently, in a wide range of medical and electronic uses. It is an interesting point to ponder.
The history of gold mining is a very interesting and colorful part of our American heritage. The discovery of gold has had a way of causing mass population migrations throughout the world. The settling of the American west was, in a big way a, result of one of these migrations. Same is true with the Alaskan gold rush's
The early Greeks believed gold was drops of sunshine!! Gold is mentioned over 500 times in the Bible! The word Gold comes from proto-indo-european word “gohl” meaning “yellow”. One cubic foot of gold weighs half a ton!! The “San Francisco 49er’s” football team is named after the California gold rush of 1849. In 1933, Franklin Roosevelt made it illegal for Americans to own gold and this law remained in effect till 1974. Civilizations were built and civilizations destroyed because of gold, blood was shed, hearts broken and lands discovered.
There is so much to say of the interesting facts about gold, it would take a large book and many volumes to cover the subject. With all the historical facts about gold that can be learned, what I've got here dosn't even scratch the surface. Everything I’ve said here can be embellished upon or refuted. That’s what makes it so interesting. Ed
