The Budweiser Beach Bashes!

Ah, another favorite memory of living at Myrtle Beach AFB. During the late 1980's Budweiser used to have a weekend of fun and sun on the beaches of South Carolina. They were gracious enough to provide a few volleyball nets and volleyballs. Music was played loudly over the beach area and semi trucks were backed up to the beach filled with beer. People could consume the beer openly in public on the beach in an area about the equivalent size of four city blocks of beach front property.

The area was roped off and you had to show ID to enter and drink. They had large wagons with chicken wire walls extending upwards of six feet for you to toss your empty beer cans into for recycling purposes. the MB Police department personnel patrolled the beaches on ATV's to help anyone that had too much joy juice or whom had tried to nap for too long on the beach, (read passed out). They ensured the peace was maintained and that no one suffered heatstroke. A couple of rescue squads were standing by just in case any injuries were incurred during the Beach Bash.

The military police had a presence in the immediate area too. One MP/SF/SP and otherwise designated law enforcement members were given jurisdiction over any of the airmen, marines, seamen, and soldiers that got into any troubles. I witnessed a lot of funny occurrences of bravery (read drunken stupidity) and some hilarious party games on the occasions I visited the Beach Bashes. For instance, I witnessed a group of marines cannon-balling off the three story roof of nearby hotels and landing in the an eight foot deep swimming pool.

Another scene I witnessed was a seriously funny game of Simon Says on the beach involving some army guys that had me almost in tears with all the antics they were pulling. Their leader (Simon) had a mega phone and was belting out some rather unusual commands. I also got to see the first Twister game played on the beach I had ever seen. It was rather wild and all involved seemed tanked up on the beer. Too funny.

I am not sure if Budweiser still has these Bashes anymore, but nothing beats a cold one on the beach in South Carolina in the summertime. Shagging, swimming, cooking out and cruising the strip at night was a time to enjoy back then. Lots of volleyball and horse play were in high fashion. Here's a toast to the good old days! Grab a Bud and let it take you back to the times of yore! Cheers!

Good memories Rodney...we usually had a certain bar our boats crew would usually gather at while in port. Our boats slush fund would usually put us up for a keg or two.....How about the 25 cent beer out of vending machines....lol
