It was not past 9:30 am when my friends called me up and asked me to come near the main road where they would pick me on their way to Galle. As we agreed, I was there standing, in my blue and white beach shorts and slippers on a Monday morning whereas other people were rushing to work to deal with the Monday morning tantrums.
My friends arrived there past 10.00 am. They picked me up, we pulled near a super market to buy some munchies for the journey and then, we were on our way again. We passed Kottawa, Homagama and then reached the Southern Highway entrance which brought us to just forty minutes away from the scenic city of Galle. One of my friends, Charith was driving the car and for sure I knew it was not his Dad’s car which he usually borrows for outings like these.
So I decided to ask him about this new vehicle and he replied,
“I got this from Kings Rent A Car Colombo machan. They are the best in Sri Lanka. Rent a car services really improved after they came in to the business man!”
“Oh I see” I replied.
After 40 minutes we excited from the Pinnaduwa exit. As we reached Galle we could feel the sea breeze blowing against our skin, inviting us to take a refreshing dive in the clear blue sea. But this time our game plan was not to go diving but to explore the Galle fort!
The Galle fort holds two main entrances. One is through the Galle cricket ground which is frequently cluttered with tourists both local and international. And the other entrance is the main gate where you find “VOC” placed on the inner side of the gate to represent the Dutch East India Company. As we walked further in to the Galle fort we encountered the Galle fort temple, the Galle fort mosque and the Anglican church of Galle fort. Each had a unique flair of colonial architecture and delivered a strong message of peace and unity.
“Guys, I’m hungry.”
Anita was complaining that she haven’t had anything since morning because she was too excited about the trip to Galle. So we were off to find a nice cafeteria where we could have something to eat. Luckily the Galle fort unveiled an assortment of cafeterias where one could enjoy a wide variety of food and even beer.
After a filling meal we decided to roam around till the evening as the Galle fort offered so much to see. We called it a day around 5 in the evening and decided to head back home with so many cherished memories in our hearts.
Very interesting article. I'd wish more people would read it.
