The Many Places We Go!

Recently, I began scanning through my memorabilia from my former military days. While doing so I found it interesting that I had been so many places in the 20 plus years of my career. I want to know if anyone else has been to that many places in their respective service careers. If you want I would like for you to weigh in on the places you have been. Please comment and share your adventures with us all.

Thinking back on my career timeline, I remember either being stationed or on a temporary duty assignment, at the following installations for various amounts of time:

Lackland AFB, San Antonio, Texas (Basic Training)

Sheppard AFB, Wichita Falls, Texas (3 different times)

Myrtle Beach AFB, Myrtle Beach, South Carolina (twice)

Chanute AFB, Rantoul, Illinois (Training for Weather School)

RAF Alconbury, United Kingdom

Alhorn AB, Germany (TDY)

Ramstein AB, Germany (Operation Joint Forge)

Seymour Johnson AFB, Goldsboro, North Carolina

Charlotte DIAP, NCANG, Charlotte, North Carolina

Naval Air Station Pensacola, Pensacola, Florida (Training for NDI)

Hill AFB, Ogden, Utah (MAFFS)

San Bernardino Tanker Station, San Bernardino, California (for MAFFS)

ALI AL SALEM AB, Kuwait (2 deployments)

Walter Reed Medical Hospital, Baltimore, Maryland (medical Procedures)

That was an impressive list of places to see and be. Many miles have I walked in combat boots and many people have I met along the way. These locations were as varied as the great people I met at each one of them. From basic training until my retirement in September of 2006, I served proudly with the best military force on this planet. They are by far the leanest, meanest, toughest and smartest armed forces ever assembled. I would never want to be a "bad guy" fighting against the US armed forces.

In just these locations I moved over 12 times. I have served on active duty for 10 years, 2.5 years as a Traditional Air Guardsman, and finished out as an Air Guard Technician. I trained as a Crew Chief on the A-10A Thunderbolt II, then as a Pharmacy Specialist, next as a Non-Destructive Inspection Specialist, and finally as a Repair and Reclamation Technician working on C-130H airplanes. I received awards, medals and ribbons while serving my country. They are displayed proudly and prominently in a shadow box in my house.

The Patriot inside me applauds our Active Duty members, our Guardsmen and our Reservists all over the world. They are fighting a new type of fight and will prevail I am certain. From O-10 down to E-1 they are by far the best trained and best equipped military to deal with the threats to our nation. Thank them proudly, for doing the tough jobs that many people can't do or won't do. Thank the Veterans of our nation and appreciate all of the sacrifices they endured to help build this nation into the Super Power it is today. Without our Veterans, and the amazing duties they performed in adverse times, we would be much worse off. I thank you for leading the way and setting the example for those of us whom followed in your foot steps.

Fellow readers and authors, I welcome your stories of the many places you have been. And if you see a Veteran shake his or her hand and thank them for the freedoms you enjoy. They have never asked to be thanked, but do it anyway. It most certainly is the right thing to do.

With Memorial Day just around the corner, be nice to the men and women that have served or are serving now. Help them rake leaves or offer to cut their grass, wash their car or invite them over for a burger or beer. They deserve respect and admiration. Thank them and let them know you are grateful for their service.
