Okay—I'm probably a little biased, seeing as how I'm a native Oregonian. But hear me out! Oregon is truly a marvelous place. Sure, it rains a lot, but the products of the weather make it worth suffering through. Have you seen the natural landscapes that Oregon offers? It's absolutely awe-inspiring. And there are a gazillion (okay, maybe not that many, but definitely a lot) of places in Oregon that directly promote the exploration and taking in of its beauty. Here are some ideas to get you out into the Oregon outdoors:
Camping
Seriously, what better way to experience Oregon than by sleeping in its backyard? Granted, there are undoubtedly differing definitions of camping. Some people think of camping as going to a campground and parking a car in a spot, then setting up a tent. Or maybe camping means taking the RV out on the open road and finding a spot for the night. People even stay in yurts now days and consider that camping. Then there's also backcountry camping—i.e., sleeping on possibly the most uncomfortable ground ever, surrounded by wild flora and fauna, and putting your body into the most awkward positions in order to do your bathroom business.
Whatever your definition of or comfortability level with camping is, just get out there! There are loads of areas to camp within the state of Oregon. There are designated campgrounds and RV parks, and there are lots of little off-the-beaten-path areas where one can find a place to set up camp. Take advantage of Oregon's backyard in whatever way you want to!
Hiking
This has to be my favorite method of experiencing Oregon nature. I can't recommend it enough. I know, I know—hiking isn't for everybody. I get it. Not everyone wants to strain their bodies for the sake of experiencing the outdoors. But not every hike is so daunting, I promise! I can't count how many hikes exist within Oregon that are for those looking to enjoy the splendors of Oregon without the heavy labor. There are a bunch!
Though very popular, and thus very busy, Multnomah Falls is a great place to get in a short hike, with beautiful views. The hike to the top of the falls is a little over a mile, and has a lot of uphill areas. But, just a fraction of the hike (2/10 of a mile) and workout takes you to Benson Bridge, which offers a stunning view of and even some cooling mist off the falls.
Of course, there are also a bunch of moderate to difficult to "omg, I'm going to DIE!" hikes offered in Oregon. I am personally a fan of the Cascade Head hiking trail along the Oregon coast. This trail is about 6.8 miles out and back, and worth every step. The last mile of the trail has a lot of switchbacks and steepens a bit, but the views from the top make up for the sweat and hard work.
A Final Plea
I really can't say enough how much I love Oregon. Truly, if you ever get the opportunity to come to this lovely state, take it! But don't just sit inside the whole time you're here. Oregon is filled with some of the most beautiful scenery. It's also incredibly explorer friendly, so explore away! Go camping and take a hike in the woods or an open meadow! Frolic in the glory that is Oregon's outdoors!
