Knee Pain Treatments Through Exercise

As we all get older, there are alot of aches and pains that are noticed more often or not. As I have now reached the ripe old age of 46, ha, ha, I have noticed more pains than I would like to admit. The pain that I am going to focus on in this article is knee pain. This is because I certainly do have more of this than any other pain. I will outline some of the treatments and exercises that I have done over the years to battle the pain.

First of all, there are all different types of knee pain. First, there is Acute knee pain, which is usually from some kind of injury. Then, there is Chronic knee pain, which is usually caused from Osteoarthritis or Rheumatoid arthritis. I have a combination of these causes, I have osteoarthritis caused by an acute knee injury that happened over twenty years ago, while parachuting in the Army. Also, as a Licensed Vocational Nurse, I have been on my feet all day for many years. These are all contributing factors to having the osteoarthritic build up in my knee joints.

There also can be lifestyle aspects that can contribute to having the arthritis build up in your joints. In my case, I was always very active and physical when I was in my teens and twenties. I liked to jog, play tennis, hike, work out with weights, and all jobs that I have had in the past were physical.

Some of the ways that I tried to reduce my knee pain, without medical intervention, was exercise. If you keep moving, the synovial fluid,(which lubricate your joints), along with the meniscus (your body's shock absorber within your joints), will keep the pain at a minimum. Note that I say minimum, because in my experience, arthritic pain never completely leaves. When I went to physical therapy I mostly did exercises that would strengthen your quadriceps, which is the major muscle group in your thigh. The therapist told me that the quadriceps would pull up on the knee, taking pressure from the knee. I have noticed a little less pain with doing what the therapist suggested. Of course, the therapist also suggested to not do exersices that directly would put pressure on the knee joint.

This would include doing squats or deep knee bends, and what I really enjoy is walking up small hills at first. I have worked my way up to medium sized hill walking, with my little yorkie. She also really enjoys walking with me. The last exercise that I really enjoy, is swimming in the pool at my gym. This is no impact, which is what you really want. The main thing is that you improve your quality of life, and as you get older won't have problems moving around.

If that pesky knee is really hurting after an exercise, you can get an ice pack, grab some ibuprofen, and elevate it on pillows in bed or on your sofa. I really hope that this helps people to understand that knee pain from arthritis can sometimes treated without surgical intervention. Always consult your physician before starting any exercises, because you may have other conditions that may prevent this activity.
