Mr Hennagin\'s Ghosts

A long long time ago in a galaxy far far away, just kidding, way back in 1952 my father was still in school and one of his teachers stood out considerably from the rest, this teachers name was Mr Hennagin, he was ex RAF and used to arrive at the school every morning on his world war 2 style boxer motorbike complete with sidecar (think Nazi motorbikes in Indiana Jones movies and you'll be right there) and flying goggles. He also had a secret mirror somewhere near the back of his classroom so if he had his back to the students he could see which ones stuck their fingers up at him, brilliant.

But this isn't what made him stand out, when he wasn't working as a schoolteacher he was moonlighting as a ghost hunter and attended, investigated and helped to exorcise many haunted locations, always looking for an answer to the question are ghosts real or not? One particularly creepy building he was called upon to help a local priest investigate was a very old monastery which had been converted into a nunnery, the nuns had been reporting hearing strange sounds late at night, feelings of "someone standing right behind you" while alone and a dark shadow or figure had been seen by some of the nuns but according to them it was only ever seen briefly "from the corner of your eye" and by the time you brought your full attention to bear it had faded away.

Mr Hennagin arrived to investigate the nunnery under a light drizzle of rain on a cold night in late October, as he walked toward the main double doors, wet gravel crunching under foot, he scanned the front of the building and couldn't help but compare it to an old castle or fort, the high unclimbable walls, the narrow slits of windows looking down on his current position perfect for defending archers and the large double doors would be easily barricaded from inside, who knows what strange things had happened here in years gone by.

His thoughts were interrupted when one of the doors opened and he was greeted by the priest he usually worked with on these investigations and the head nun, father McLeod introduced Hennagin to sister O'Connell and no sooner had he finished than she began to relate the recent paranormal happenings to them in hushed tones. According to her most of the sightings and experiences were happening on the second floor, specifically in the large laundry room and the corridor leading to it.

As they walked to the main office sister O'Connell explained that all the other nuns were staying elsewhere until the investigation had been carried out, and that she would remain in the first floor office all night while they conducted their vigil on the second floor. They agreed that father McLeod would check the double front doors and all other windows and doors were locked to ensure that they were the only three people in the building, he would also check all the first floor rooms were empty, Hennagin would proceed straight to the second floor and make sure all windows were locked and all rooms were empty and then head for the laundry room corridor and get settled in the laundry room where they would spend most of the night.

Father McLeod decided to check the kitchen first because it had a fire door he wanted to check was secure, the kitchen itself was fairly large with the usual assortment of pans and what not hanging from the back wall and all the plates, cups and other bits and pieces were neatly stacked on shelves. In the centre was a square table large enough for four chefs to work at, or four nuns in this case, the only light in here was creeping in from the hallway and in spite of all the reflective surfaces it was fairly dim, it was also deadly quiet apart from the malicious gurgling of the hot water boiler. Father McLeod strode to the fire door at the back of the kitchen and made sure the locking bar was in place -SMASH- a piece of cutlery broke into shards on the floor behind him, but he didn't turn around to look because cold needle points were spreading over the back of his neck.

Hennagin wasn't overly impressed with the "creepy factor" of the laundry room's corridor or indeed the laundry room itself, he knew this was because his imagination had set the bar far to high and what he was presented with in reality was a clean, nondescript corridor with a red and black checked floor and a large, square laundry room with wooden hangers fixed on rails which ran around the walls at a height of about 6 feet. He also knew that the laundry rooms creepiness had all night to increase and if it was anything like previous investigations it probably would do just that. He was setting up two chairs at the back of the room for the night ahead when he heard the door creak open behind him.

"We might be in for some fun and games tonight" said father McLeod as he entered the room "something just smashed a plate on the floor right behind me while I was locking up the downstairs kitchen!", Hennagin didn't even look up "I thought there was only one nun in this building tonight?" he joshed, father McLeod bristled "Yes yes, hilarious, we'll see if your so smart mouthed when two in the morning swings around and your in here on your own" now Hennagin did look up "where you off to at two in the morning, I'm almost certain there will be locks on the nuns underwear drawers" father McLeod's face cracked into a smirk "you speaking from personal experience? anyway I'm not leaving you here on your own in this poltergeist hotspot to steal nuns underwear.

I want to check out that kitchen again, maybe sit down there for half an hour and just listen quietly" Hennagin finished setting the chairs "sounds like a good plan, we might get better responses if we are on our own and we'll be covering two rooms instead of one, well lets get on with it".

The first couple of hours passed uneventfully with both Hennigan and father McLeod sitting in their respective chairs inside the laundry room, the former practicing picking a padlock to keep himself awake and the latter reading a worn copy of The Lost World by Arthur Conan Doyle, both of them topped up with coffee brought up by sister O'Connell earlier.

Just as Hennagin was starting to think what a boring night he was in for two loud bangs came from the laundry room door, as if someone on the other side had struck it twice quickly with a bat, both men snapped fully awake, the usual effect sudden surprises have on the mind and body, and looked at each other BANG again once this time but more forceful, they were both on their feet now approaching the door slowly side by side.

"That you sister O'Connell . . . " boomed Hennagin, half to ensure he was heard through the door and half to self assure, no answer. "who's opening it then?" "I got the last one." countered father McLeod and Hennagin having no counter counter reached for the handle, took a firm grip and pulled the door open and inwards, nothing, just the empty corridor. They both decided that now would be the best time for father McLeod to head down to the kitchen and stay there for a good few hours, throughout the remainder of the night they both heard more explained noises and reported feeling spells of extreme cold. Along with sister O'Connell they both related their experiences to the head of the local catholic church who gave the go ahead for an exorcism to be carried out in the nunnery, after which the strange happenings ceased altogether.
