7 Ways to Protect Your Kids From Chemicals In the Home

If you have children running around your home, you know the importance of keeping them healthy and safe. Every parent wants their child to be able to learn and play in a safe environment. Although many things are obvious to most of us for example, putting those little plastic safety plugs in the outlets and keeping cutlery out of reach, there are many other not so obvious dangers our children may face also. Here are 7 simple ways you can protect your kids from chemicals on your property.

1. Remove dust.

Not only can dust irritate children's allergies, but it can also collect traces of metals like lead and trace chemicals from fire retardants or pesticides. The best way to alleviate this problem is through frequent vacuuming and using a HEPA filter. Also, make it a habit to remove shoes when entering your house to cut down on the amount of dirt which enters your home in the first place. Be sure to wet dust furniture and fixtures often as well.

2. Avoid toxic fire retardant which is sprayed on many household items.

Most items that are bought in stores have been treated with this chemical. A better alternative is to purchase eco-friendly items which have not been exposed to the fire retardant. If you are unsure if an item your child is frequently exposed to is treated with this specific, you should visit the manufacturer's website or contact them directly.

3. Choose non-toxic detergent.

A simple internet search will reveal several ways to create your very own cleaning solutions or natural alternatives. Also, when using cleaners, make sure to open windows to minimize the fumes which children might inhale. Always keep cleaning products unreachable of children.

4. Use caution when gardening.

Because many gardeners use pesticides and fertilizers to increase their harvest, you and your children should take precautions when working with soil. To minimize the amount of dust and chemicals inhaled, you should wet the soil prior to working in the garden. Additionally, gloves should be worn if possible and hands should be thoroughly washed when finished.

5. Wash those veggies.

When preparing fruit or vegetables for your family, be sure to thoroughly wash them first. Apple cider vinegar is a great natural way to cleanse any pesticide residue off. Just be sure to permit the vinegar sit on the vegetables for a few minutes before rinsing.

6. Filter your drinking water.

By using a filter water pitcher just before drinking or cooking with water, you can remove chlorine and other potential contaminants like lead or bacteria. Drinking plenty of clean water is essential for developing immune systems in addition to everyday healthiness. With a filtered water pitcher, you can ensure your children always have access to clean water at the convenience of the tap.

7. Remodel carefully.

Just before making any renovations, figure out if your home contains any asbestos, lead, or mercury. If so, leave it to the professionals. Don't risk your family's health by trying to save money.

Although there are various other, these are a few things you can possibly do to assist protect your children from harmful chemicals.
