When my youngest son was in kindergarten, his first day of school he was very, very shy. He would look at me like he was about to cry but I made him sit by the other kids on the mat. But for the rest of the year he was fine.
Then we changed his school when he began 1st grade and this is when it all started. He would not let go of my mother's hand because she was the one to drop my son's off at school. He would then look at her crying, then the throwing up because his stomach was upset. I remember getting that way when I was in basic training and had to run. I hated to run and I would feel so sick to my stomach every single time. So, when my mother told me he threw up at school when she was leaving him I knew it was anxiety. One day near Christmas break I was off for two weeks and one of the weeks my boys were still at school. I went to drop off my son and sure enough he did the hand hold and crying. I then saw that he had a substitute teacher and then introduced him to her and he was fine. The next day, he did not have a substitute teacher and he still held so tightly and did not want me to leave. There were even some days he would be in school and at lunch he just threw up and that was in one straight week. That is when I realized it is an anxiety problem arising.
The school nurse told me that it would be best for me or my mom not to volunteer, but am I wrong to disagree with the school nurse? I just feel that it is better to slowly pull away and that talking with him about being a big boy and staying by himself is better than just leaving him crying and throwing up. I talked with the school principal and he understood my viewpoint into disagreeing with the school nurse suggestion. He too has a son at the school and he said he ran into the same problem before.
So, I looked it up and found this some tips to help with my child.
After learning about the things that I can do to help him, it has helped tremendously! Now he can go to school without holding our had so tightly.
