When I take time to reminisce days gone by when I was a kid, the fondest memories that naturally occur to me is the art and crafts part, especially skewed towards sketching and painting albeit not standard Van Gogh material! Anything that could create color was presumed acceptable, crayons, color pencils, water color paints etc. Not sure if this often occurs naturally for all kids but damn sure kids draw a lot of inspiration from art. Ever notice the way they express the environment around them in drawings? My first contact was with normal writing pencils and biros left around the house by others, and I could sketch ‘illegibilities’ of all sorts on anything I came across much to the chagrin of anyone who left important documents lieing around! Oops. Not that I can clearly remember this events but once in a while mum narrates a story or two about it.
To put a leash on this destructive force of art, I got to be bought a drawing set; a book, color pencils and crayons, too much color and media for one tiny creature! Of course some of the crayons got to be nibbled at in the course of servicing art for children! Either way this was a significant first contact with standard art material. My sets and I got married for a long time to come even when I got to know of oil paints much later at about age ten. It is the media that changed but not the enthusiasm.
As I got older drawing became a center to my world as I was a quiet child keeping to himself as I am told! The quality of the drawings improved to more legible stuff and coloring was still a key aspect, no need of drawing if I’m not going to color it! Don’t get me wrong, I don’t produce art gallery stuff, neither am I a rookie, I do it for fun and it tickles my imagination.
Now at 26, I don’t do it as often as those times but nonetheless once in a while I indulge for ‘remedy’ and get unparalleled satisfaction. The point is ever so often getting your kids to partake in art and crafts is important and the cost involved is worth it as everything can be obtained from your local art supplies store. If not home they will at school in the arts and crafts lessons.
Not only drawing but also other stuff I have not mentioned, papier mache which I did a lot, modeling with the famous plasticine. Always wanted to know how to use charcoal on canvas but the general mood is that is for professionals! May be one day I might just decide to hop into one of this art classes.
