But I Can’t See the Pictures!

In earlier times it was the telling of stories which helped to involve children in the world around them. It was a learning tool and the way in which stories were carried through the ages to modern times. Some of the stories may have been ‘lost in translation’ but they are still entertaining, engaging and informative in some way.

Storytelling no longer has the credence that it once had. Books, illustrations and, of course, technology have made storytelling redundant in the minds of many. This is a dreadful loss and for some people, hearing a story by a storyteller will never feature in their experiences.

As a teacher of young children, it was a case of teaching them to listen to a story without a book. This is a concept that they couldn’t understand and the cry of ‘But I can’t see the pictures!’ filled me with sadness.

Telling stories gives children an opportunity to use their imagination and build up characters in their mind. This is an extremely useful talent to have and can help children to gain a love of stories and, of course, leading to a love of reading. In this day and age of computer literacy, it is still crucial to be able to read.

As a storyteller, there is nothing better than watching the expressions of your audience as they become immersed in the tales. This applies to children and adults. However unnatural it may feel to listen to someone tell a story, I can guarantee that you will soon be caught up in the plot.

There are so many ways of encouraging children (and adults) to read and using a variety of methods is the best option. Storytelling is one of those options and one which seems to have been left by the wayside. A storyteller can incorporate a variety of techniques in a performance to appeal to all types of audiences.

Children are natural mimics and, in my opinion, there aren’t many things that beat watching a child re-tell one of your stories using animation and an extended vocabulary. Once they have told a story, writing the story becomes so much easier. Listening to a child changing a story to make it their own is an experience not to be missed. The Three Little Puppies and the Small, Kind Wolf was a joy to behold by a six year old non-reader.

Storytelling is an art and an art needs practice. It can be incredibly boring listening to a story being told in a monotone.

If you have never been to see a storyteller, I would recommend that you give it a try. I believe you will be pleasantly surprised and become an advocate for this wonderful, but vanishing art form
