There are various treatments especially therapies and medications that are given to individuals diagnosed with the obsessive and compulsive symptoms of OCD. With regard to this matter, therapies are found to be very effective on the obsessions and compulsions of patients. It is through cognitive behavior therapy that patients understand and are aware that unnecessary thoughts can lead and trigger obsessions and compulsions. It is normal for a certain individual to experience and complain bizarre thoughts, worries and anxieties. But in cases where a certain individual is identified to have Obsessive Compulsive Disorder, his complains of his thoughts become so alarming because they perceive it that their thoughts are equivalent to actions. These thoughts then afterwards are being feared and can cause too much distress and anxiety that can affect the normal routine of patients in school, at home and in work.
Cognitive behavior therapy helps in treating the obsessions and compulsions of patients by assessing their dangerous thought patterns. Cognitive behavior therapy sees to it that the compulsions experienced by patients become less threatening and harmful. They are given the awareness that their behavior can be treated when they are properly managed and coped with. At the same time, cognitive behavior therapy or CBT presents alternatives to patients which can help their obsessions and compulsions in various situations if the need arises.
Same through with Exposure and Respond Therapy, Cognitive Behavior Therapy is a process of therapy given to patients in about 15 to 20 sessions. Sessions normally last from 50 minutes until an hour. The patient is usually required to have his homework and have a journal of all the activities he has done throughout the day.
Reasons are also raised on whether what treatment will be best applied to patients. When it comes to Cognitive Behavior Therapy, patients are asked to face their fears and not to suppress their thoughts. Suppressing thoughts and running away from your fears give a temporary relief to the patients. Yet they are not that good and can actually make the condition especially the obsessions and compulsions of patients worse.
Before involving the patient into Cognitive Behavior Therapy, it is recommended to consult doctors, psychiatrists and health takers on which treatment will best and effectively cure the symptoms suffered by the patient. Every treatment will only be effective in curing the symptoms of the patients is done with cooperation and the willingness of the patients to be totally relieved from their disorder.
