Some babies have a very hard time getting the sleep they need to be a happy and healthy child. This is partly due to the fact that parents do not always know the best sleep schedule for their child. Establishing the right schedule for your baby might be hard in the beginning, but it will definitely pay off in the end. There are many ways that might work for your child, but make sure you find the best schedule that work best for your baby and you.
Try to feed your child at the same time everyday. This will help you, since you will know when they are hungry. If they have just eaten and they seem like they are not in a good mood, take them out of the environment they are in. They could either be overstimulated or just simply bored.
Wake, Eat, Sleep. So many parents go by this, and rightfully so. By feeding your baby when they wake up keeps them full and happy during playtime. Once they start getting sleepy, you will know it is because they are tired. If you feed your baby to put them to sleep, you will end up making your child become dependent on eating in order to fall asleep. This can be a slippery slope. The baby needs to be comfortable with self-soothing themselves to sleep.
If your baby is difficult putting to sleep only at night, try to create a bedtime routine. If your baby loves to be read to, read them a book or two, rock them for a few minutes, and then put them in their bed. This can be very comforting to your child and might be just enough to get them to relax enough to get some sleep. The same would work if your little one really loves bath time.
Figure out a schedule based around times that your child shows signs of being tired. If they usually take a nap around 10 AM, start putting them down for their nap around 9:30, that way they are not too tired, but they are tired enough to fall asleep. Follow this procedure with every time they take a nap and go to sleep at the end of the night. Try to make sure your baby goes down for their naps around the same time during the day. Children love predictability. They know when something is about to happen, because it happens at the same time everyday.
There are so many reasons why children might not be functioning to their fullest from day to day. By not having a set schedule when it comes to their sleep could possibly be why they are frustrated and not getting the sleep they need.
