Considering medication and the use of stimulants as treating the inattention and hyperactivity can sometimes result to the loss of appetite making them loss their weights as well. These cases happen depending on how patients respond and handle their ADHD symptoms and on the dosage of the stimulants prescribed. Weight loss usually happens in the first few weeks or months of taking stimulants and after which they regain their normal body weight. There are also situations where patients still continue to experience weight loss even after a few months. Stimulants can decrease a child's appetite, leading to weight loss.

As prescribed by doctors, immediate release stimulants like Ritalin and Methylin or their generic brands must be taken 30 to 45 minutes before meals. If stimulants are recommended to be taken in the morning, it is better to have them right after waking up so that there is a gap between taking breakfast or before going to school or doing any other chores. On the other hand, if the patient experiences decrease in appetite because of the disorder and do not feel like eating, medication must be taken after meals.

Food contents, specifically high fat or acidic foods like orange or any other citric fruits may change the rate and amount of the medicine in the stomach but they vary depending on what stimulant is taken and depending on what stimulant is taken and also depending on the amount of dosage prescribed. This does not absolutely mean that medicine will not work on the patient’s system patient’s attending doctor or any other specialist of the disorder.

On the other hand, extended release stimulants like Concerta or Vynase or their generic brands are usually taken even without taking meals but can still affect the patient’s appetite during lunchtime. It is recommended to observe when the patient is often times hungry and after which is, make it as a heavy meal. There are also cases when small but frequent snacks or meals can help in regaining the appetite of the patient and regaining the weight he has lost.

It must be assured that snacks are always available at home, in school or at work and that foods are to be enjoyed and must be nutritious. In cases where ADHD is diagnosed on children, parents must talk to the teacher and ask their permission to allow their children to take snacks even before or after the break.
