How Do You Choose The Right School For Your Child?

For many parents choosing the right school for their children is one of the most important decisions that they make. This shows by the fact that many of NSWs top private schools have long waiting lists which require you to register your child at birth and pay a substantial, non-refundable registration fee.

For some parents tradition is the determining factor in deciding which school to send their son or daughter to. If dad went to Kings, or Knox Grammar, or Scots College, for example and did well, that is where the son will go. If mum went to Ascham, or Kincoppal, or Kambala that is where the daughter will go.

This is not, however, always ideal as each school offers something different and not every school will suit every child. Quite often families who are truly focused on finding the right school for their children with have their children at a range of schools.

Some schools offer an exceptional performing arts curriculum, whereas others offer a wide range of sporting options or a wide range of elective subjects. It must also be considered that some schools adhere to very strict discipline codes in terms of factors such as dress and conduct whereas others are more relaxed. Also some schools place great emphasis on academic performance and expect the child to commit to say a minimum of three hours of homework a night, whereas other schools have a philosophy that a child should have the time to develop other aspects of himself or herself out of school hours.

It is important to look at your child in deciding which school to send him or her to. If you select a school that is at odds with who your child is and what he or she truly values, the child will struggle to fit in and will never be truly happy. Choosing the wrong school can also lead to bullying and the child developing a real lack of confidence. If, for example, your son is a quiet child who loves to draw and paint sending him to a traditional, boys school where rugby prowess determines social standing is going to end in tears. The other boys will have little time for the boy who does not conform and he will find himself in a minority group and isolated.

Likewise sending a child who struggles academically to a school that offers few electives and concentrates on traditional subjects such as maths, english, physics, chemistry, biology, geography, history, economics and French and runs the classes at a pace that factors in a minimum of three hours homework a night is going to result in an unhappy child as he or she will always be at the bottom of the class. This can cause self-confidence problems which can translate into eating disorders, aggressive behaviour and withdrawal.

It is important to look carefully at the prospectus for each school and to attend an open day so that you get a feel for what is on offer. Speak to the students and teachers and ask questions about all the issues that you know will be important to your home. When choosing the right school for your child make an informed choice.
