Father noticed that his son spends too much time playing computer games. To motivate him to pay more attention to the studies, the father:
"When Abraham Lincoln was your age, he read books next to a fireplace."
"When Lincoln was your age, he was the president of the United States," answered the son.
Sometimes I remember and laugh of what I heard from my kids. What a remarkable generation. What a sharpness. The story with Abraham Lincoln might be made up but it absolutely stands up for how our kids see us.
If you are in your 30 or older by now could you imagine yourself telling your parents how stupid they are? It is so impolite, I agree. And we did not say such things generally. Well, I received these words from my 3 years old daughter and in the context I had no mind to be angry. It was a nice quiet afternoon...
... and I opened TV while it randomly showed a channel where we have left it last time. The scene was a bunch of men brushing their teeth in a huge communal bathroom. I commented to my mother "Looks like there is a movie about military guys serving their time." My daughter looked at me and shouted: " Are you stupid? These are prisoners!"
And prisoners they were. How she managed to conclude it from viewing the scene just for 10 seconds and reached the right conclusion and I failed?
Another time I took a public bus with my 2 years old son. It was early morning and it was crowded. No available seats except next to a very old lady. She was really really old. I mean really old. I offered him to go and have a seat as there was a way to go but he strongly refuse by saying: "I'll wait til she dies and then sit."
He had not have any experience with losing someone, relative or friend. Yet he sensed that this person was so close to death.
I have been paying close attention to what my children are saying. The older they grow the farther they move from their magical power to reflect the world so purely.
A mind of a child must be a hard thing to learn about. Even for scientists. The period when they already can express their selves and still do not master the art of manipulation is so brief.
I simply wished to share with you my thoughts. But I would be glad if you dig in your memories and perhaps remember a story or two, a story that shows us how stupid we are and how smart are they. You can contact and share via my website that I am building into SOMETHING ( hopefully).
