Knowing What My Children Will Become

Doctor, dentist, lawyer, IT expert, professor, Internet marketer, author, policeman, retail clerk, volunteer, youth worker, dog trainer, tooth fairy, mermaid, masseuse, clergy person, fireman, arborist, agrobiologist, pilot, farmer, busker, musician, Reiki Master, herbalist, secretary or CEO of a Fortune 500.

The truth is I don’t think I care what my children become. Not physically. It’s just a day job and if they’re not enjoying it they can change it.

There are some things that I do want them to be or have though.

Contentment, peace, laughter, understanding, wisdom, a desire to learn, a need to grow, concern for their environment, caring for others, hope for their future, warmth in their hearts, family of their own who love them as much as I do and, most of all, no regrets when they’re old and I’m long gone.

I know it’s not realistic to desire to shield my children from every negative experience in the world. The truth is that unless they have a few then they will never achieve half of what is on my idealistic list.

What I can do, however, is prepare them for a time when I will hold their hearts from afar and no longer their hands to the school gate.

This requires me to be wiser than my experience, more understanding than my knowledge is and more of a parent than a friend.

I’ve never had children of this age before. I’m learning as I go and, unfortunately, I have to practice on the children that I would most like to get it right with the first time. This was my dad’s wisdom that he shared with his three teenage girls when he had to make decisions against what we naively thought would be best for us.

Parents have a lot to answer for, and lest this comment allows a fickle moment of self-doubt to creep in, I would hasten to add that much of it is good.

It is our fault that our children are clean and cared for, dressed and groomed, fed abundantly, educated and entertained, played with, taught right from wrong, nurtured and loved, disciplined and corrected. We are to blame when our children feel cared for, safe, surrounded by boundaries of love and innocence and know where to run to when life isn’t being fair.

The bottom line is that most parents would move the earth to be an umbrella of safety and love that their children dance under as they blissfully run along this path of life.

I, for one, wouldn’t have it any other way.

Heather, I don't have children of my own, but my sister once said that when she comes back, she wants to come back as my dog. I think that was the nicest compliment I have ever been paid. You are a great mom. Both you and your children are blessed. I have nieces and nephews whom I love dearly. I want to protect them too. Always want them to know that if ever life gets tough, they have me as support. Beautiful article. Thank you.

My children have so much joy from their aunts and uncles. There is a bond of family and love that the children seem to understand is unconditional. I'm glad you're able to spend time enjoying yours. There's a lot of joy in these experiences. Thanks for your kind words.

Being a father of three I understand where you're coming from Heather. It's a question of balance whether or not to interfere with their development and I used to make it a rule not to give them advice unless it was requested. It is all too easy for parents to be overpowering and overprotective. The nursey rhyme "Little bo peep" is good advice!

Yes, there's definitely that side of hit too Kim, especially as they (or we) get older.

Hi Rob, may your computer filing glitch never be fixed. I love seeing you around and have the same distracting problem when I see your articles appear. I'm writing lighter things these days as I'm saving all my 'unconscious mind' thoughts for my website! Hope you're having success with your other stuff too. ;-)

Knocked out 5500 words yesterday and all accepted by the computer experts writing the program as being clear and concise instructions, obviously it is a first draft and will need more attention, I will spend the day testing the completed program modules to see if I'm happy with the result. Maybe they accepted my writing hoping I'll be happy with their encoding, we'll see!
