Studies and research explain that there have been results which indicate that obsessive and compulsive symptoms of patients have been caused by substance abuse. With regard to this issue, Motivational Interviewing Techniques have been developed to give treatment and relief to patients who suffer disorders due to misuse of alcohol and other harmful substances. Also, these techniques provide cure and alternatives for anxiety.

Most patients experience obsessions and compulsions on being contaminated and fears on objects and animals or insects. This has been somehow the reason why they hesitate in undergoing certain medications or treatments. Because of this, motivational interviewing techniques give patients a perception of optimism in their lives and in their disorder. At the same time, the techniques presented help patients to accept and face their fears in a way that will reduce their obsessions and compulsions. Motivational interviewing techniques help the patients reach their goals and objectives in life despite of their OCD symptoms. These techniques will also help them find a partner even though they suffer from sexual dysfunctions.

This is done by carefully studying and observing the factors that may affect and influence the disorder of the patient. Because of these motivational interviews, there are cases where patients learn to accept their obsessions and compulsions that have helped them to avoid anxieties that may worsen their disorder.

Motivational Interviewing Techniques serve as a stepping stone and an assistance if the patient is planning to undergo any exposure based treatment in the near future. Along the way, techniques will reveal the various hindrances that may prevent the patient from successfully finishing a certain therapy or medication. It is a usual case where patients become unaware that despite of their obsessions and compulsions, still they do not want to alter it and instead suffer from it. Because of this, therapists and specialists may ask open questions to patients and ask further questions based on their answers.

During the motivational interview, therapists will be able to acknowledge the different factors that hinder patients to change and do something about their obsessions and compulsions. After which, both the therapist and the patient will talk about the advantages and disadvantages that may influence the objectives of the patients with regard to their symptoms and current therapy or medication.

Research and studies show that motivational interviewing techniques will help patients in their poor insight as well as to be able to begin accepting their fears, obsessions and compulsions. By these, they are able to have more knowledge of themselves which relate to their OCD and also discover things that will help them recover from their disorder.
