Research and studies have given attention to the co-morbidity of Obsessive Compulsive Disorder and Bipolar Disorder. It has been explained that both disorders happen on patients at the same time. It has been said that bipolar disorder can worsen the existing obsessive and compulsive symptoms Of OCD.

Bipolar disorder is referred to as a mental malfunction whereby patients identified with it usually suffer from manic or mixed episodes of depression. On the other hand, mania is an abnormal, persistent and usually an irritable mood that may last for a week or even more than a week if not properly handled.

Bipolar disorder is usually manifested by some dominant symptoms and indicators. Mania is a distinct period of abnormally and persistently elevated, expansive, or irritable mood, lasting at least one week. A manic episode is usually accompanied by three or more of the following symptoms. Individuals with bipolar disorder usually have too much of self esteem. They also suffer from a very dominant fall or change in their sleeping habit. They also become more talkative which is not very usual of them. They also have racing thoughts and are not able to maintain and keep their focus on their tasks. For this behaviors to be considered as manic, they must be excessive or too much in a way that they greatly affect the daily and normal living of the diagnosed patient.

Research has presented that 10 to 35 out of 100 patients identified to have bipolar disorder are also found to have Obsessive Compulsive Disorder. Most cases, OCD are diagnosed ahead of bipolar disorder. Also, patients with bipolar disorder are mostly prone to have OCD five times more than to have any other major depressive disorder. Patients identified with both OCD and bipolar disorder has also greater risks to experience mental malfunctions and illnesses. It also explained that patients diagnosed with bipolar disorder when diagnosed with OCD at the same time will experience even worse and difficult-to-treat symptoms. This case may also happen when an Obsessive Compulsive Disorder patient is also diagnosed with bipolar disorder. This condition often results because of the abuse, misuse and over dosages of alcohol and drugs. It must also be remembered that when OCD occurs together with bipolar disorder, different and further treatments and therapies must be given to the patient depending on his symptoms. Doctors and health specialists also recommend that when they are diagnosed at the same time, bipolar disorder must first be treated because they present even more harm than that of OCD.
